Capitalism is a nightmare, but occasionally, we get something special and positive out of it. Easy example: A while back, my grandma was diagnosed with Celiac disease. One of the most underrated problems with Celiac? No more Oreos. Fast forward to 2021: Oreo releases gluten-free Oreos! Problem solved. (And that community must have bought them in spades; there are now multiple gluten-free Oreo variants like Golden and Mint.) Now, Oreo just sent over their newest innovation in restrictive diet cookies: Zero Sugar Oreos.
These cookies will be released this January in both standard and Double Stuf formats. After trying both, there’s not enough difference between the variants to warrant separate reviews. If you’re going to pick these up for yourself, rest assured that just like regular Oreos, the difference is just your personal preference. (I preferred the standard version’s cookie-to-creme ratio.) Consider the following as my overarching opinion of the concept.
- Oreo Zero Sugar Cookies
-
Pros: Cookie science is amazing. I actually prefer these to a standard Oreo. These don’t taste like any “zero sugar” treat I’ve had before; they just taste like cookies. That’s nothing short of a miracle for a cookie replicating the flavor of pure sugar. (Check out my recent newspiece on this release for the full aspartame-free sweetener breakdown.) And this is a minor note, but the cookies actually say ZERO SUGAR on them—that’s so cute! The words are hidden so well in the classic Oreo cookie design that I didn’t notice until I saw a social media post that featured a super-zoomed render of the cookie.
Cons: As weird as this sounds, these taste more chocolatey than standard Oreos. The flavor of the cookies is stronger than the flavor of the creme, and I’m not complaining. While I love the change, it may turn off Oreo purists who want the creme to be the star of the show.
