Better-for-you has come for the legacy cookie aisle. Earlier this year, I reported that OREO was looking into a zero-sugar variant of their classic cookie; earlier this week, the brand announced official release plans for these cookie science projects. I swear, we’re three years out max from Protein OREOs. Let’s crack open all the information we’ll need to fit OREOs into our diet plans.

How are they making zero-sugar OREOs?

One of my favorite videos on the entire internet is the “OREO CEO” sketch posted by Dropout in 2021. In the extended version of that video, there’s a joke about how the factory tried to make zero-sugar OREOs but couldn’t make them work. (That video also lists multiple fake flavors that have since become real products; I think OREO took a few ideas from that video, y’all.)

Four years later, I have an email in my inbox about real Zero Sugar OREOs and exactly how they’re made. And it’s complicated. Per the brand, these cookies are sweetened with maltitol, polydextrose, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium. OREO also proudly proclaimed these cookies to be Aspartame-free, for those of you who were worried. Will that chemical combination replicate the classic cookie-and-creme recipe? We won’t have to wait long to find out.

When and where can I get Zero Sugar OREOs?

Good news, folks: these cookies are hitting shelves soon. As soon as January 2026, you’ll find new “stand-up” bags of Zero Sugar OREOs on shelves. And, as if it couldn’t get any better, OREO is releasing zero sugar versions of standard and Double Stuf! OREO is sending over samples ASAP; stay tuned to Sporked for our review of these innovative new sandwich cookies.
