If you missed the news, Tostitos looked at Mexican street corn and said, “Why have we not made this into a chip yet?” To which we all replied, “I don’t know, dude. Kinda feels like a no-brainer??” So here we are. These new Tostitos chips basically promise the flavor of elote in chip form. (I don’t know about you, but I’m imagining the Elote corn chips from Trader Joe’s.) The official description for Tostitos Mexican Street Corn Chips mentions notes of sour cream, spices (very mysterious), and lime. I’m sold.

When I sat down to try these, I couldn’t stop thinking about Tostilocos. If you aren’t familiar, it’s a Mexican street snack where vendors take bags of Tostitos and drown them in toppings like pickled pork rinds, cucumber, jícama, peanuts, chamoy, lime juice, and hot sauce. Out of all the Tostitos flavors out there, I’ve seen that their salsa verde chips are popularly used for Tostilocos, but I wonder if these brand new Tostitos chips might taste even better. Obviously, I had to try them to find out.

Pros: These are totally loaded in a salty, lightly spicy, tangy, almost buttermilk-y seasoning that makes them delicious all on their own. There’s definitely a subtle charred corn-on-the-cob thing going on, but it mostly just tastes like a flavor-blasted corn tortilla chip. I tried this with the new Tostitos Jalapeno Popper Queso, and my god, someone had to take both away from me before I made myself sick. Incredible stuff is happening over at the Tostitos lab, people. That’s all I’ll say.

Cons: This is one of those situations where it doesn’t really taste enough like Mexican street corn to totally wow me… but I don’t really care. It’s a damn good tortilla chip.

Verdict: The street corn flavor is subtle enough to complement just about any queso, guac, or salsa. And yes: They’re the perfect—perfect—base for Tostilocos.

Sadly, I can never move back to my home state, Florida, because even if the seafood is totally unmatched, there aren’t enough Mediterranean or Korean restaurants to keep me sane.
