BTS OREOs Are Based On This Korean Street Dessert

OREO has been on a solid kick of collaborating with musical artists recently: Lady Gaga’s cookies were practically glowing, Selena Gomez’s cookies were packed with cinnamon, and Post Malone’s cookies were somehow our favorite OREOs ever. The global musical sensation BTS is coming for that throne with their own OREO cookie variant to celebrate their 13th anniversary next month. Much like Selena Gomez OREOs, the flavor of these BTS OREO cookies is inspired by a popular cultural dessert you might not be familiar with: hotteok.

What is hotteok?

Hotteok is a popular South Korean street food similar to a stuffed pancake. A stiff dough is stuffed with ingredients like brown sugar, honey, and cinnamon before being grilled. These are cooked and sold from stalls during the winter as a sweet alternative to another popular South Korean street food: savory stuffed pancakes. (I can translate this to American: hotteok is the deep-fried Twinkie to the savory stuffed pancakes’ corn dog. Same basic concept with a wildly different taste.)

What flavor are these BTS OREO cookies?

Per OREO, these cookies are “Brown Sugar Pancake” flavored. (While the individual cookies themselves are purple, they’re not ube flavored–surprising, I know.) Each sandwich cookie features a double layer of white and beige cremes. The information I received wasn’t clear on whether each layer of creme had a different flavor; it’s possible that the white layer is standard OREO creme while the beige layer is packed with the aforementioned hotteok-inspired flavor.

And it wouldn’t be a modern OREO release without tons of different cookie designs. There are 13 different embossments (for the 13th anniversary, keep up) including the band’s logo, a lightstick, a finger heart, and a few special messages for all the members of BTS ARMY.

When and where can I get my hands on BTS OREO?

OREO will open an online presale of their BTS cookies on Monday, June 1st. One week later, BTS OREO cookies will hit shelves anywhere OREO is sold. Some lucky BTS fans have already started finding these cookies in the wild, especially at Walgreens of all places. If you really can’t wait to have these street dessert-inspired cookies in your life, I’d start looking there.
