Free stuff! We simply can’t move for free stuff! We’re batting it away here, people! I’m sort of not exaggerating, either. We’ve been hit by a surfeit of free food news this week, which we’ve duly channeled and delivered here. We’re talking free tea throughout the whole of June. We’re talking free ice cream bars from Ben & Jerry’s. We’re talking free smoothies from Smoothie King. We’re talking free breakfast from Hardee’s

And now, we’re talking free cakes from Betty Crocker. A million of them, to be exact. Here’s what you need to know.

Happy Birthday!

General Mills, the company behind Betty Crocker, has just announced that in honor of the US’s 250th birthday, it’s running a huge giveaway from the brand. You’ll have to bake the cake yourself, mind you: How this is all done is that if you submit a picture of a receipt showing a purchase of a participating Betty Crocker cake mix product to americasbirthday.bettycrocker.com, the brand will reimburse you, to the tune of up to $3.99.

It’s worth mentioning that it will only do this while supplies last, but it’s committed to up to a million reimbursements, so we’re hoping they won’t all disappear overnight. You do have to purchase your product and submit your receipt by July 11, though. Your rebate will be provided via PayPal or Venmo, and General Mills will only give out one per customer.

Happy Birthday…Again!

Along with this announcement, Betty Crocker also dropped the results of a recent survey on birthday cakes, which revealed some interesting habits and tendencies. More than three-quarters of people said that a birthday doesn’t really feel like a birthday without a slice of cake, while the vast majority of folks prefer chocolate cake over anything else (apart from the people of Kentucky, who opt for red velvet cake more than other flavors). Interestingly, too, people prefer their cakes relatively unadorned: almost half of all participants said that they only want frosting as a topping. Oh, and half of all people prefer a corner piece. The more you know!

There was no indication in the survey of whether people think that they should be celebrating July 4 with birthday cake (unless it’s their actual birthday, then duh), but if this promotion’s anything to go by, it’s trying to usher in a new tradition. Hey, we’ll bite. Bite on a piece of cake, that is! Hehe. Okay, I’m done. Go get that free cake, people.
