Mountain Dew is one of our braver soda brands in terms of flavor innovations. The brand has delved into concepts ranging from “spicy” to “licensed candy” and beyond, but one flavor stands head and shoulders above the rest in the weirdness category: Mountain Dew Cake Smash. This birthday cake-flavored soda was initially planned for a retail launch in mid-2020 to celebrate Mountain Dew‘s 80th birthday. 2020 was a particularly awkward year to have a birthday party, so the brand had to pull back those celebratory plans… for a year.

Did Mountain Dew Cake-Smash ever make it to market?

In the summer of 2021, Mountain Dew (still rocking the MTN Dew shorthand at this time) launched an online giveaway where you could apply with “your funniest 2020 party-fail story” to win either cash or two 16oz cans of Mountain Dew Cake-Smash. The brand sold limited-run 6-packs of the soda online through the rest of the summer following the giveaway. By late September, Mountain Dew Cake-Smash was history.

Until now! Mountain Dew has revived the terrifying concept of “cake-flavored soda” for a limited time this summer. Despite all the buzz around America’s birthday, this revival is here in honor of a different birthday: Slurpee. 60 years ago, 7-ELEVEN started selling their iconic frozen drink line; to celebrate the big 6-0, we’re all being subjected to a cake-flavored Mountain Dew-flavored Slurpee.

Is this the first Slurpee based on a Mountain Dew variant?

Mountain Dew and Slurpee have a long history of collaboration dating back to at least the summer of 2003. Video game franchises like Halo and Call of Duty brought Mountain Dew’s Game Fuel subline to the party, while movies like Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Superman Returns got their own limited-time flavors with thematic names like “Darth Dew” and “Kryptonite Ice”.

To be clear, the new Slurpee isn’t explicitly “Mountain Dew Cake-Smash” flavored. This new frozen drink is titled “Mountain Dew Confetti Chill”. That being said, I truly hope Mountain Dew didn’t actually create an entirely different cake flavoring formula for this collaboration. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it… or rather, if it’s already broke, don’t come up with a new way to break it.

Will you be hunting down a frosty cup of Mountain Dew Confetti Chill at your local 7-ELEVEN/Speedway/Stripes? Let us know in the comments.
