As a Midwest-based food reviewer, there are still a few chains I don’t have access to short of a flight or road trip: In-N-Out, Jack In The Box, etc. (That being said, I am pretty close to one of the last six Rax Roast Beef locations if they ever become relevant again.) While I am broadly spoiled with access to practically every major chain, it makes the standouts all the more awkward to deal with.

None of these are more personally heartbreaking than not being near a Whataburger. This 24/7 Texas-based burger joint has expanded nearly as far east as there is American land to sell burgers on… but not so far northeast that there are any in Ohio. I’ve enjoyed Whataburger on many trips before, but it would be mighty convenient for this chain to debut in Ohio. That said, since I was already in North Carolina over the weekend, I decided to treat myself with a stop at the… Orange Reverse-Arches? Whataburger needs a nickname.

Alongside the top-tier Hot Honey Crisp Whatachick’n Sandwich I reviewed earlier this week, I also ordered myself Whataburger’s newest milkshake innovation: Peaches & Cream. This milkshake launched alongside a Summer Peach Whatafresher (made with real freeze-dried fruit); both items are available now while supplies last. Let’s find out whether this summery new milkshake can beat the heat.

New Whataburger Shake!

Pros: I was not expecting this to have such a strong, authentic peach flavor. While this doesn’t explicitly call out the use of real peach, it could definitely fool me. Peach isn’t a super common flavor for milkshakes, but this is easily the most accurate (and not coincidentally, best) I’ve ever had.

And for the treatmaxxers, here’s a friendly reminder that Whataburger’s large milkshake is a whopping 32 ounces–a third larger than the large shake you’ll get from the other guys.

Cons: Call me crazy, but this isn’t wild enough for Whataburger. These are the folks who popularized the Dr Pepper Shake and later debuted the Dr Pepper Blackberry Shake; am I supposed to be impressed with peaches and cream? (Yes, I know I’m exceptionally spoiled.)

I’ve been thinking about the fantastic Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut Shake ever since I sampled it at the National Restaurant Association Expo earlier this year; let’s get that on tap at Whataburger ASAP–especially since it was the talk of the town at this year’s McDonald’s Worldwide Convention.
