There’s A Rotisserie Chicken Purse―Including A Lemon Pepper “Flavor”

It’s one of the deepest truths of (carnivorous) cuisine: there’s nothing better than the cozy, nostalgic, roasted wholesomeness of home cooked chicken. Unless you’re busy, that is. In which case, yep, turn the oven off, because a store-bought rotisserie is a very close second.

In fact, rotisserie chickens are often as good as home-cooked. And that’s not a dig at home cooking. Rotisserie cooking just has that magic whereby rotating chickens slowly drip their own fat and juices onto themselves―and the rest is golden brown, juicy gravy. Literally. The only problem? Getting a rotisserie chicken home without spilling all that unctuous, schmaltzy meat juice. And yes, it’ll sound slightly insane at first, but none other than our tried and true megastore mama Walmart has come up with the solution: the Chicken Purse. 

It’s A Gimmick, Sure―It’s Also a Great Idea 

Sure, these words sound as crazy to utter out loud as “Heinz Wedding Bib,” but Walmart isn’t off its discount rocker here. First of all, September is National Chicken Month. Second of all, Walmart has clearly been having fun with their products recently. Third, and maybe my favorite part, their Chicken Purse isn’t just a pragmatic celebration of a funny month, providing customers an easy (kind of cutesy) way to bring Walmart’s beloved rotisserie chicken unmessily home. It’s an actual nod to fashion.

A fall fashion trend, that is: the oversize clutch (it’s real, just ask Marie Claire). National Chicken Month starts tomorrow, September 1st, which is when the purse will start to be available, at 8AM, at SparkShop.com (or, if you happen to be in the Walmart headquarters area, in-person at the Spark Shop inside the Walmart Welcome Center in Bentonville, Arkansas). 

Food And Function

I truly see this as like, a highly pragmatic and year-round-welcome shopping accessory. Okay, I also just love, love, love rotisserie chicken. Helpful as the “purse” is to their shoppers, Walmart’s also leaning into the fun (and fashion) of it all with two distinct “flavors” (as in styles): Traditional and Lemon Pepper. Both purses appear to be made of a decently thick (i.e. hot chicken juice containing/heat-retaining) material, with a secure zip on top, with the Traditional accented in a handsome shade of purple and the Lemon Pepper brightened with stripes of an almost golden yellow. 

The bags even come with charms―because anyone who loves accessories knows that accessories can also be accessorized, even when they’re chicken-related. Everything, by the way, is in the reasonable, inscrutably penny-specific Walmart price range, with the purses themselves going for $5.97 (the price of Walmart rotisserie chicken). As for the charms: the Traditional Rotisserie Chicken Purse and Lemon Pepper charms are also $5.97, and both the Great Value Louisiana Hot Sauce and Great Value Lemon Pepper Seasoning charms are $4 each.
