My personal feeling about frozen dessert versions of candy bars is that they can be seriously hit or miss. Sometimes, they nail it: You get everything you like about your favorite chocolate bar, just a little colder and slightly jazzier. Other times, they feel like a pale imitation of the real, room-temperature thing. So, for every Kinder Bueno White frozen dessert, there’s a Snickers Salted Caramel Minis. These frozen desserts are never truly bad; they just sometimes don’t stand up to scrutiny.

For whatever reason, though, I feel like KitKat’s new frozen dessert is gonna be a winner. Don’t quote me on that one; I haven’t tried it. It’s just a gut feeling. Let’s check it out.
KitKat Bites
This week, food content creator @markie_devo revealed that KitKat was gearing up to release its new KitKat Bites. These look as straightforward as regular KitKats are: Each bite is a little semicircle of frozen dairy dessert, coated in KitKat chocolate. That’s kinda it; the appeal here is in the bite-sized form, as it was with Snickers Dipped Cheesecake Bites, which came out earlier this year. Those bites were a bit more out there, though; these are simple.
You know what, though? I think that might work in this dessert’s favor. When ice creams or frozen desserts are full of mix-ins and adornments, flavors can quickly get lost, especially given that cold temperatures reduce your ability to actually taste things. So, while some people may think these are boring, I’d say they feel pleasingly straightforward and unfussy.
But What Do The People Think?
The people, by and large, think the same as I do. In @markie_devo’s comment section, there are plenty of people saying how excited they are about these new KitKat Bites, and a fairly liberal use of the fire emoji. What some folks are taking issue with, though, is the use of frozen dairy dessert instead of actual ice cream.
This makes sense – frozen dairy dessert is generally considered to be less full-flavored and has a lower perceived quality than ice cream – but it’s worth mentioning that there are plenty of good frozen desserts out there. Plus, a lot of frozen versions of candy bars do the same thing, although Snickers Salted Caramel Minis and the others in the Minis collection do use real ice cream. But I digress! KitKat Bites are due to drop in major stores soon, so keep an eye out for those 32-piece tubs in your freezer section.
