Y’all, it isn’t even Halloween, and OREO is dropping holiday flavors like we wouldn’t notice. There I am t the grocery store looking for mystery candies and spooky sodas when I find a whole display of Hot Cocoa Chips Ahoy, Fudge Covered Ritz, and a brand-new Gingerbread edition of the recently updated OREO Cakesters. The madness has to stop. I’ll pledge my vote to any politician who enshrines Halloween’s exclusive ownership of October into law.

That said, as Sporked’s most tenured OREO orator, it’s still my responsibility to chow down on these new OREO Cakesters with an open mind to find out whether the flavor can overcome my grumpiness at their premature arrival. Come with me as I find a way to complain about eating cake.

OREO Gingerbread Cakesters Review

New OREO Cakesters!

Pros: The gingerbread-iness of the cake-cookie layers is super authentic, though the extra-soft texture clashes with the ginger-snap texture this flavor profile brings to mind. I swear the creme filling recipe has been modified to taste more like classic gingerbread house kit icing, but I haven’t found anything to confirm or deny that hunch. Since this is such a solid translation of everything good about gingerbread, you’ll enjoy this precisely as much as you enjoy classic gingerbread cookies.

Cons: Gingerbread is squarely in the middle of my holiday flavor preference chart: much higher than peppermint, but nowhere near the heights of apple cider or mint dark chocolate. Dare I say it, Gingerbread might be tied with Pumpkin Spice for yours truly…

How many flavors of OREO Cakesters are there now?

Right now, the OREO Cakesters lineup includes the classic chocolate cake and vanilla creme, golden cake and vanilla creme, chocolate cake and chocolate creme, and confetti golden cake and vanilla creme. Adding this new limited-edition Gingerbread to the mix brings the total to five flavors of this fan-favorite… snack cake? Cake sandwich? Miniature whoopie pie? Whatever this is, there are five of them. Rest in peace to my personal favorite, chocolate cake and peanut butter creme, which appears to have been quietly discontinued right around the recipe update earlier this year.

Speaking of which, since the OREO Cakesters recipe was updated earlier this year, every OREO Cakester review published here on Sporked is actually out of date. How awkward! Stay tuned for an OREO Cakesters ranking as soon as I can get my hands on the rest of the lineup.
