For a German supermarket, you’d think that Aldi might be slightly better at beer – but alas. Alas! It can be a little hit and miss. We’ve personally never been blown away by Aldi’s private label beers (summer options or otherwise), and while some drinks it stocks, like Wernesgrüner Pilsner, hit the spot, others…don’t. Its booze may be affordable, but it’s often not people’s favorites.

We thought that things might be different this time. We really did. Unfortunately, its latest beer isn’t exactly winning rave reviews from Aldi customers. Let’s dive in.

Aldi Field Craft Nectaron Juicy

Aldi’s new Nectaron Juicy beer is an American IPA, which leans heavily on fruity, tropical notes like passionfruit, pineapple, and grapefruit. At 6% ABV, it’s a pretty punchy brew, and its 473-ml can size means there’s a fair bit of alcohol in each serving. 6% is a nice alcohol level for a beer, though – weaker ones tend to be underpowered in terms of flavor and just come off as watery, so we had high hopes that Nectaron Juicy would shine.

Sadly, Aldi customers are saying it doesn’t. “This has no flavor to me. Very bland,” said one person on Reddit in a thread discussing the IPA, while another called it “very mid.” Another customer stated that “Every beer [they’ve] ever had at Aldi is never better than just OK,” calling into question the entirety of the store’s line (like we said…surely it should be a little more robust, right?). Over on Untappd, a beer rating and reviewing site, Field Craft Nectaron Juicy has a score of 3.51 out of 5 from well over 200 ratings. So, not the worst in the world, and some customers do speak highly of its full body and clean aftertaste – but definitely not the best. It seems like if you’re looking for a knockout IPA, you’re probably not gonna get it here.

So…Where Will I Get It?

I’m glad you asked. There are plenty of excellent IPAs out there, including Dogfish Head 60 Minute, which we gave a 10/10 rating in our taste test. If fruity’s your thing, Juicy Jay East Coast IPA and Hill Farmstead’s Double Citra both hit the spot, and they’re especially good if you’re barbecuing (which I appreciate is going to be less useful now that we’re in the middle of fall, but bookmark ‘em for next summer). At Aldi, though, you might wanna skip the beer aisle.
