We tried 22 Kit Kat flavors in search of the best Kit Kat flavors. Are those all the Kit Kat flavors there are? Heck no.

Which Kit Kat flavors did we taste?

While we did our best to score all the American Kit Kat flavors that are on the market (or only recently discontinued), we only scraped the surface of international Kit Kat flavors. We included as many Japanese Kit Kat flavors as we could reasonably source, as well as a few Australian Kit Kat flavors. That just means we’ll be able to continue to update this ranking of different Kit Kat flavors and more and more make their way to our desks.

(Scrub to the 2 hr 38 min mark for our Kit Kat flavors taste test.)

What we looked for in the best Kit Kat flavors

We tasted a wide variety of KiKat flavors. How do you compare a Matcha Latte Kit Kat to a Frosted Donut Kit Kat? It’s like trying to compare a wombat to a squirrel. They’re two different beasts! So, we evaluated these Kit Kat flavors by how much they tasted like what they purported to taste like, and how much we enjoyed them. Simple as that.

Best Kit Kat flavors, ranked

Kit Kat Matcha Latte

Matcha Latte

Kit Kat Matcha Latte

I’m a matcha Kit Kat freak. I love the dang things. But that’s because I love matcha, in general—and most matcha or green tea flavored things, like ice cream. If you don’t, this Kit Kat flavor won’t change your mind. But if you’re into matcha lattes, this might just be the best Kit Kat flavor for you. It tastes like green tea ice cream—just warm. It’s a perfectly balanced mix of that grassy, slightly bitter matcha flavor and sweet cream. And if it’s not bitter enough for you, go ahead and try the Strong Matcha Kit Kat. My colleagues couldn’t handle it, but I’ve continued to treat myself to one pretty much every night. It’s becoming a problem.

Kit Kat Strawberry

Strawberry

Kit Kat Strawberry

Japanese Kit Kat Strawberry is such a departure from the kind of strawberry candy we’re used to in the States. It tastes so much like strawberry—not just sweet, strawberry-esque cream. There are little pops of freeze dried strawberry bits in the coating. I would never typically pick up a strawberry-flavored sweet but this Kit Kat flavor tastes more like a sophisticated dessert you’d get at a nice restaurant than a standard candy. Brava, Kit Kat Japan!

Kit Kat Sweetness for Adults

Sweetness for Adults

Kit Kat Sweetness for Adults

What is Sweetness for Adults? It sounds like the name of a scrambled “adult” channel you might have stumbled upon at 3 a.m. back in the ‘90s. But it’s also what the name of this Japanese Kit Kat flavor translates to. Also, though, I really don’t care—because whatever it is, I love it. It has this malty, almost coconut-like flavor that washes over you, and the wafer seems to be even more crisp than usual. It’s light and delightful, with a unique, definitely “adult” flavor. If you’re looking for a totally new Kit Kat flavor to try, give this one a go.

Kit Kat Lemon Crisp

Lemon Crisp

Kit Kat Lemon Crisp

We have finally hit an American Kit Kat flavor in our ranking of the best Kit Kat flavors—one of two. Sadly, for us Americans, our Kit Kat flavors pale in comparison to most of the international Kit Kat flavors out there—especially Japanese Kit Kat flavors. At least we’ve got Lemon Crisp! The flavor is light and crisp and somehow refreshing—as refreshing as a wafer-based candy bar can be, at least. It balances the right amount of floral flavor with sweetness and just a hint of tartness. It’s the best Kit Kat flavor for spring and should be in every Easter basket.

Kit Kat Gold Crush with Crushed Caramel Crisps

Gold Crush

Kit Kat Gold Crush

You hear a lot about Japanese Kit Kats but Australian Kit Kat flavors deserve some praise as well. A newer Kit Kat flavor, Kit Kat Gold Crush is coated in caramelized white chocolate and layered with cream that’s studded with crushed caramel bits. And it’s. so. good. The chocolate tastes like melted caramel ice cream and then you get these pops of buttery, crunchy caramel. Not to sound like a dated commercial for Dove chocolate, but this Kit Kat flavor is pure indulgence. While you can find it at online retailers specializing in Australian goods, people have also found it in World Market locations. Happy hunting!

Regular Kit Kat

Original

Kit Kat

I’m not going to sit here and tell you what an original Kit Kat tastes like. It’s chocolate. It’s cream. It’s wafer. It’s good! It’s fun to eat. It’s a classic. But (gasp!) it’s not the best Kit Kat flavor! Still, out of all the Kit Kat flavors out there, it’s still pretty hard to beat.

Kit Kat Gooey Caramel

Gooey Caramel

Kit Kat Gooey Caramel

Another Australian triumph, this is, essentially, a slightly bigger regular Kit Kat with an added layer of gooey caramel. One bite and it made me realize that it’s exactly what Kit Kat has been missing all this time. The caramel adds such a great new, chewy texture, along with some really good burnt caramel flavor, too. Could it have more caramel? Sure. But this way it’s not messy. This is an elevated version of a Kit Kat. It almost makes Australia worth braving the giant spiders, venomous snakes, stinging sea snails, man-eating salt water crocodiles, etc, etc, etc.

Chocolate Orange

Chocolate Orange

Kit Kat Chocolate Orange

The best Kit Kat flavor is one of the many incredible Japanese Kit Kat flavors. Japanese Kit Kat Orange Chocolate tastes like a Terry’s chocolate orange—only better. The chocolate is creamy and rich, and the orange flavor is wonderfully bitter and juicy at the same time. It’s a simple idea but executed at the highest level of competency. If you’re only going to try one of these Kit Kat flavors, make sure it’s this one.

About the Author

Justine Sterling

Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients. Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now). Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test! Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
