The Best Low Sodium Soup for Anyone Watching Their Salt

Low sodium soup can be very, very bad, but that’s not surprising at all. Salt equals flavor. What is surprising, however, is that low sodium canned soup can actually be really delicious. Shocking, I know!

I tried a ridiculous amount of reduced sodium soup (13 cans in all) in hopes of finding something that wasn’t completely flavorless. Instead, I ended up finding a bunch of options I really liked and would absolutely buy in the future. Whether you’re watching your salt or not, buy the best low sodium canned soup because it’s some of the best canned soup you can buy in general!

Best No Salt

Campbell’s Unsalted Cream of Mushroom (50mg sodium per serving)

Do not eat this mushroom soup on its own. There is not a lick of salt added, so it tastes extremely underseasoned, as to be expected. But wait, it does have a place on this list. It’s the best low sodium canned soup for cooking. This would be a phenomenal casserole ingredient. It has such a rich texture and savory mushroom flavor. With this salt-less soup, you can control how much salt goes into your dishes.

Best Vegetarian

Amy’s Light in Sodium Lentil Veg (320mg sodium per serving)

This low sodium lentil soup tastes like a less salty version of Amy’s regular lentil soup, which we ranked as some of the best lentil soup overall! It’s extremely hearty and you get a nice hint of sweetness from the carrot. This is a great soup for a cold winter’s day. If you’re looking for a low sodium canned soup that really sticks to your ribs, this is the one!

Best Meaty

Progresso Low Sodium Roasted Chicken Noodle (470mg sodium per serving)

You will not miss the salt in this low sodium chicken noodle soup. First of all, don’t ignore the word “roasted” in the title. The chunks of chicken taste roasted! The noodles are al dente. The vegetables are tender without being mush. This is a great version of chicken noodle soup in general, so it’s no surprise that it’s one of the best low sodium canned soup options we tried.

Best Creamy

Progresso Reduced Sodium Creamy Tomato Basil (490mg sodium per serving)

Progresso Reduced Sodium Creamy Tomato Basil Soup is a stellar tomato soup that tastes like it has plenty of salt. That’s probably because it does have 490 mg of sodium per serving—remember, it’s a reduced sodium soup, not specifically a low sodium soup. But the original Progresso Tomato Basil soup has 690 mg of sodium per serving, so it definitely has less sodium! It’s rich and creamy and would welcome the dunk of a good grilled cheese. The sodium may be reduced, but the flavor is certainly not.

Best of the Best

Progresso Low Sodium Chicken & Wild Rice (480mg sodium per serving)

This is one of my new favorite canned soups of all time. The real star of the show is the wild rice. It is so filling and has a wonderfully nutty flavor. The chicken chunks are large and meaty. The broth is, in fact, salty. Well, it tastes salty. It is, actually, low sodium (480 mg per serving). This is the best low sodium canned soup money can buy.
