All the Milano Cookies (Even White Chocolate Milanos), Ranked

In the world of sandwich cookies, Pepperidge Farm Milanos are the height of sophistication. But it’s not stuffy sophistication—no. This is accessible elegance, baby, courtesy of your boys down at Pepperidge Farm. They’re the kind of cookies that make you feel like you’re treating yourself to something special even though they only cost around five bucks a bag. You truly love to see it.

But if you’re only eating dark chocolate or milk chocolate Milano cookies, you’re missing out. There are Milano flavors—and a lot of them are really good. In fact, the very first Milanos (released in 1968!) were mint chocolate flavored. Who knew?? (Well, my colleague Justine Sterling knew and a lot of people who commented on our taste test video also knew, but you know what I mean.)

When we sat down to try all of these Milano cookie flavors—including the brand spanking new white chocolate Milano cookies—we tasted them both dry and dunked in unsweetened almond milk. If you are not dunking your Milanos, I insist you start! The texture of the moist butter cookie with the firm chocolate center is incredibly satisfying. As Justine put it, it’s like a sandcastle you can eat. A delicious, chocolatey sandcastle. Anyway, whether you like milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate, there is a Milano on this list for you. And if you like all three, there are a lot of Milanos on this list for you. Here are all the Milano cookies we could find (minus seasonal varieties), ranked from worst to best.

dark chocolate milanos review

Milanos!

Dark Chocolate

I’ve never been much of a Double Stuf Oreo guy (sorry, but there is such a thing as too much creme), but in our taste test we quickly learned that the “double” chocolate Milano cookies are much better than their less chocolatey counterparts. There’s just not enough filling in these things! Plus, the flavor of the dark chocolate layer dominates every bite—it just doesn’t really complement the butter cookies it’s sandwiched between. There are no bad Milanos—but there are better Milanos than this.

milk chocolate milano cookies

Milanos!

Milk Chocolate

We had the same issue with these that we had with the regular Dark Chocolate Milanos: There just isn’t enough chocolate. The milk chocolate layer is a much better complement to the crunchy cookies (you can actually taste cookie when you eat these), but they’re still underwhelming, especially if you’ve been introduced to the world of double chocolate Milano cookies.

raspberry chocolate milanos review

Milanos!

Raspberry Chocolate

Raspberry Chocolate Milanos smell like Joyva Ring Jells (iykyk), and they taste like them, too. They’re very tasty, but they could use a little more of the nice tang you get from fresh raspberries. These are good Milano cookies, but I don’t think they’re for everyone.

lemon white chocolate milanos review

Milanos!

Lemon White Chocolate

White chocolate Milanos, all of which combine a layer of white chocolate and a layer of fruit-flavored creme betwixt the butter cookies you know and love, are brand new. And I know what you’re thinking: They are an affront to chocolate lovers. If you can get past those misgivings and your natural suspicion of white chocolate, they’re all really, really good. The only reason these don’t rank higher is that they remind me a lot of Girl Scout Lemonades, while the other two flavors are more unique. Can’t stress it enough: We loved all of these new Milanos flavors.

strawberry white chocolate milanos

Milanos!

Strawberry White Chocolate

If you like strawberry milk or strawberry ice cream, you will like these new white chocolate Milanos. They’re creamy and fruity and just a touch tangy. The filling tastes like the creme that coats strawberry Pocky, but the cookie is much, much better—sandy and tender rather than crackery. This is one of those Milano cookies flavors that will hit even harder when summer rolls around.

double dark chocolate milanos review

Milanos!

Double Dark Chocolate

As I said, if you like classic Milanos, you should be buying the “double” version instead. Double Dark Chocolate suffers from the same issue as the regular Dark Chocolate Milanos (the chocolate overpowers the flavor of the cookies), but the textural experience of eating the double layer of filling is incredible, especially when you dunk them in cold milk. If you’re a dark chocolate die hard, these are the Milano cookies you should be buying.

orange chocolate milanos

Milanos!

Orange Chocolate

These taste like a Terry’s Chocolate Orange, and that’s a good thing. The orange creme has a pretty powerful orange oil flavor that borders on bitter, but all in all, this is a bright, zippy, citrusy cookie that’s gonna taste damn good dunked in a cup of hot tea. (Our very favorite Milanos of all time, London Fog Milanos, are no longer available, but I think an orangey cookie dunked in tea will scratch that Earl Grey itch.)

white chocolate coconut milanos

Milanos!

Coconut White Chocolate

Everyone who tasted these new Milanos said some version of the same thing: I don’t even like coconut, but I like these. They are unreal. They smell like fresh sweetened coconut shreds and taste like it, too. A coconut paleta that won’t give you brainfreeze. For some reason they remind me of Danish butter cookies with a slightly tropical edge—Denmark meets Italy meets Indonesia. It’s a journey! One of the things we loved the most about all of the white chocolate Milanos cookies flavors is that you can actually taste and appreciate the cookie. Even if you’re a coconut skeptic.

double milk chocolate milanos

Milanos!

Double Milk Chocolate

I’d always assumed that dark chocolate Milanos were the superior Milanos, but I was wrong. I love to be wrong (mostly when it comes to cookies.) If you want straight-up chocolate Milanos—no flavors involved—Double Milk Chocolate Milanos are the way to go. The chocolate is creamy and rich, but you can still taste the crispy buttery cookie. The texture, especially dunked, is perfect. I got a bag of these in my Christmas stocking this year and they were gone before the holidays were over.

milano mint chocolate review

Milanos!

Chocolate Mint

As we always say, sometimes classics are classics for a reason. Mint Chocolate Milanos are the OG Milanos and they really hold up. They’re crispy-crunchy and very refreshing—the mint sort of steals the show from the dark chocolate, but the combo is heavenly. No toothpaste aftertaste here. If you’re a freak for Thin Mints, you will love these—they’re not as chocolatey, but the elements are there. This is the best Milano cookie flavor!
