Bush’s Wants You To Eat Beans Like A Brit

The clichés are true, sadly. Brits really do love our baked beans. This Brit does, at least: I cracked open a can of baked beans just yesterday, and revelled in their savory, tangy, slightly sweet, vaguely mushy (but not so much that you get put off by them) nature, piled onto two slices of toast. Baked beans are, for many, a cultural signifier of these isles – and yes, yes, I know that the US has baked beans too, but ours are built differently. Not necessarily better or worse – I’m not getting into that – but differently.

And Bush’s wants you to have both. Its Beans on Toast Kit has arrived. 

Bush’s Beans On Toast Kit

On Friday, Bush’s announced its limited-edition Beans on Toast Kit, which gives people everywhere the chance to chow down on a plate of British-style beans on toast with seamless ease. Each kit consists of a box with a can of Bush’s Beans on Toast Baked Beans, with navy beans in a tomato-based, slightly thick sauce, two slices of white bread (which look as though they’re vacuum-packed), and, in a slightly left-field move, a beans on toast-inspired soccer jersey. The latter, Bush’s says, is to mark the summer of soccer just gone (remember the World Cup? Doesn’t that feel long ago now?), and is “perfect for keeping the match-day spirit alive, binge-worthy TV nights and showing off bean fandom.” If you’ve ever wanted to do all three at once, here’s your chance. 

Be aware that your chances of scoring one of these Bean on Toast Kits are limited, though. Bush’s dropped these kits on its website last Friday for $10 apiece, and it’s releasing a limited number of them every day at 9:00 a.m. ET through Wednesday, August 5. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.

A Cultural Interchange

It’s nice to see an increased interplay of bean styles here, even if it is, at present, just one way. American-style and British-style baked beans look similar, but have pretty different flavor profiles: The former is sweeter and smokier, while the latter is more tart and savory, and often simpler overall. I can’t help but feel that this release from Bush’s (which recently released some pretty wild bean flavors) might be a big tease for a wider release of Beans on Toast Baked Beans in the future. I have no proof of that, but let me pontificate. Conversely, are we in the UK going to get better access to American-style baked beans any time soon? Any food companies out there want to make that happen? ‘Cos personally, I’m all for it.
