C4 Energy‘s put out a few very interesting flavors recently: Hawaiian Punch Berry Blue Typhoon, Cherry Cola, and the topic of today’s review. (On the interesting scale, none of these come close to their super-rare “Liquid Gold” champagne-flavored energy drink in real glass champagne bottles. Those are exclusive to C4-affiliated athletes and select members of the media; I treasure my bottle deeply.) I’ll be covering Cherry Cola as soon as this caffeine buzz wears off; for now, let’s cover C4 Energy’s version of pink lemonade… whatever that means.

What version of pink lemonade does this want to be?

I have written more words than I can recount about the carnival-borne origins of pink lemonade. Depending on who you listen to, pink lemonade is either a strawberry-fied lemonade, a raspberry-fied lemonade, lemonade with red food coloring, or something else entirely. C4 refreshed their entire design scheme earlier this year, including the flavor-specific visuals extending beyond the very top of the can. Thanks to that increased footprint, we know this version of pink lemonade is definitely raspberry–pink raspberry, to be specific. If you’re a fan of raspberry lemonade, this is your kind of pink lemonade.

New RYSE Fuel Energy!

Pros: This is quintessential pink lemonade–less tart than C4’s Classic Lemoande flavor, with a touch of raspberry flavor for zhuzh. I definitely prefer this to the plain lemonade option offered by C4 in the past. The additional fruit factor sweetens the lemon which is only strengthened by carbonation.

Cons: Nearly every C4 Energy flavor suffers from an unctuous aftertaste that can turn off amateur energy drink enjoyers. I don’t mind it, but I’ve found C4 to be a harder sell with my taste testers who don’t drink energy drinks regularly.

Carbonation doesn’t inherently fit with this flavor profile, which I’ve discovered with previous pink lemonade energy drinks. While it wasn’t advertised as such, I’d swear Alani Nu’s Kimade was only lightly carbonated to better deliver the pink lemonade vibes. C4’s Pink Lemonade Energy might have been a perfect 10 if it’d followed suit.
