Cinnamon Toast Crunch Just Announced The Strangest Collab

It’s not just fall, y’all. We’re in a season of serious, seemingly nonstop flavor collabs. From Dunkin-scented Febreze to pumpkin-spiced protein shakes, products of all kinds are teaming up, trading flavors, tacking nutrients onto treats, and vice versa.

So yes it might be reasonable to think we’ve seen, and tasted, it all. But then we heard about one of the less likely collaborations we’ve ever heard of―therefore one of the most intriguing. In what might be a well-orchestrated symphony of flavor of a crazy cacophony of tastes blazing over your tastebuds, none other than Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Mexican sauce brand Chamoy Mega are teaming up to bring you not one, but two, unlikely collaborations: Cinnamon Toast Crunch Mega Chamoy-flavored cereal and Chamoy Mega Cinnamont Toast Crunch CINNADUST-flavored Chamoy Sauce. 

How Tangy Do You Like Your Cereal?

Either product name is a lot to say and, potentially, in either product, a lot to swallow, considering the flavors in play. Yes, most of us know what Cinnamon Toast Crunch tastes like (even when they add peanut butter). But chamoy is probably a bit less commonly known―not a brand but the generic name for a deeply beloved condiment, a sauce with culinary roots in Asia that’s synonymous with Mexico and made with fruit, salt, chilies, and hibiscus―the goal being a thick, unsubtle condiment that’s salty, sweet, tart, and spicy. It’s basically a hearty “¡Hola!” to your entire palate. 

There are a variety of chamoy brands out there (trust us, we’ve tasted lots). And thinking about Cinnamon Toast Crunch and the kind of unabashed chamoy flavors you’ll get in a sauce branded “Chamoy Mega,” there’s always the chance that a mishandled collaboration could be a serious, and seriously unpleasant, flavor-bomb. 

Gambling On Growing Popularity

But chamoy in general, and Chamoy Mega in particular, seems to be growing in visibility and popularity, so the collaboration might not be such a gamble―even if we can’t quite grasp what it might taste like yet. The cereal seems like the easiest to unpack―literally, also, because it’ll be packed in a resealable pouch―but in imagination, too: cinnamon-sugary, delicately crunchy cereal sort of zapped into a bit more liveliness with fruity (we’re guessing subtly salty, subtly spicy) tang. 

Actually the Cinnamont Toast Crunch CINNADUST-flavored Chamoy Sauce seems almost easier to predict (in terms of flavor profile), especially since cinnamon has a healthy, hefty place in all sorts of Mexican cuisine and tends to make a happy pair with chilies, fruits, other kinds of spicy. CINNADUST, is the trademarked name General Mills has given to the proprietary cinnamon-sugar mixture and flavor of their beloved cereal (you might also, briefly, be able to find it as a dip at your nearby Dairy Queen). The sauce seems like the less delightfully jarring of the two, with just a bit more sweetness in the chamoy mix, plus the welcome fragrance of cinnamon.
