Costco’s sourdough gets a lot of attention from its customers – and a lot of it is pretty angry. This year, its bakery section has been busy pumping out new flavors like its Olive and Rosemary Sourdough Bread, and whenever one lands, it’s usually accompanied by a lot of debate about A) whether it’s any good or not, B) whether it’s actually sourdough or not, and C) whether anyone should really care about what’s in it if it tastes good. ‘Twas ever thus.

And we’re there yet again. If you’re not tired of all this bread-based drama yet, check out its new sourdough. You might actually like the sound of it.
Kirkland Signature Cherry Berry Sourdough
Over the last week or so, Costco’s new Kirkland Signature Cherry Berry Sourdough has started to appear in stores. This sweet loaf is stuffed with cherries (duh) and blueberries (also duh), but it also has cranberries (kinda duh?) and pecans (not duh), as well as seeds and grains adorning the top. It’s a fairly dense loaf, and believe me when I say you’ll pay for the privilege: Each one costs $9.99, which is a fair whack, no matter how big and voluminous it is.
This price point is the first place customers are finding issue – and you know what? Fair enough. Over on Reddit, Costco’s Cherry Berry Sourdough was named as being overpriced by multiple people, with one Redditor saying that it was “tasty, but too expensive for this bread. I can get much better loaves for $5-6.” Other people, meanwhile, took issue with its taste. “We just tried one of these loaves, and I agree that it’s overpriced. It had a weird off flavor – definitely didn’t taste like sourdough,” said someone else. “Won’t be getting another one.”
So…Does Anyone Like It?
Yes. Lots of people, in fact. While we’re not discounting these criticisms, it’s worth pointing out that elsewhere, there have been plenty of customers who have come out to bat for this Cherry Berry Sourdough. “It is so good! Even my picky eater kept asking for more,” said a customer in the comment section of a @costcobuys post on Instagram. Another person said they liked it so much that they were going back the next day to get another one.
Look, tastes are different. Tastebuds are different. And even though Costco may not be on the best run at the moment with its baked goods (its recent buttermilk biscuits didn’t go down too well), they’ve still got a lot of fans.
