Our Honest Review of New Doritos Twisted Queso

Every time I think I’ve “caught up” with all of the latest releases, I stumble across a new Frito-Lay snack. Today, that snack is a new Doritos flavor: Doritos Twisted Queso! These are on shelves NOW for a limited time (and are not exclusive to any particular retailer), and given the theming of the red, white, and blue fireworks on the packaging, feel appropriate to pop open for Independence Day weekend. 

But are these new Doritos worth snagging for your 4th of July barbecue with the family—or should you stick with Nacho Cheese and Cool Ranch? Let’s pop the bag open and find out!

Pros: This new Doritos flavor really differentiates itself from every other “cheesy” flavor of Doritos. All of the individual elements of queso stand out: cheddar cheese, garlic, onion, and notes of jalapeno all blend together to deliver very strongly on the “queso dip experience” you’d expect. I accidentally-maybe-not-accidentally ate half the bag while evaluating the chips for this review. These are good y’all.

Cons: I’m torn on the spice level. While they aren’t “Flamin’ Hot” level hot, there is definitely some heat. This is a weird hill to die on, but I almost wish these were either less spicy or dialed all the way up to Flamin’ Hot. I would rank these somewhere around a 2-3 on the “Completely Subjective Tyler Heat Meter,” and I’d either rather they fully commit to the heat or go for something a bit more mild. Nitpick? Sure, but I’ve got my title to defend as Sporked’s resident “King of Nitpicks.”

Verdict: If you’re a person who goes for the queso dip over the salsa and you don’t mind a little hit of heat, these new Doritos are definitely for you. They’re bold and flavorful and cheesy in a way that manages to stand out differently from other flavors Doritos has done in the past.
