Even Subway’s Nachos Aren’t Safe From The Hot Honey Trend

Subway is putting hot honey on Doritos, which feels like the kind of sentence that shouldn’t work as well as it probably will.

The chain’s Hot Honey Signature Swicy Collection came back August 20th and this time it’s bringing something very different to the menu: Doritos Hot Honey Nachos. Yes, actual Doritos. And yes, they’re getting the hot honey treatment.

Not Your Average Nachos

The new nachos start with crispy Doritos Nacho Cheese Flavored Tortilla Chips, which are then topped with Monterey cheddar, veggies, and Subway’s signature Hot Honey. So you’ve got cheesy Doritos, fresh toppings, sweet heat, and very little chance of eating these without making a mess.

There are three preset versions to choose from: Chicken, Steak, or Cheese. Each one comes built with its own combination of toppings, so Subway has decided it knows exactly how much hot honey and cheese we need.

The Chicken and Cheese versions will cost $4.99 at participating restaurants, although prices vary by location and the Steak version costs extra.

And, while Subway is calling these nachos, we’re talking about Doritos as the base rather than traditional tortilla chips. Which, depending on your feelings about Doritos, is either a very smart idea or a dangerous amount of crunch in one container.

Either way, I’m struggling to think of a better excuse to turn a bag of Doritos into lunch.

Hot Honey Is Back

If you’ve been around Subway’s menu lately, the hot honey part isn’t completely new.

The chain says guests made its hot honey a fan favorite last year, so it’s bringing the sweet-and-spicy flavor back for another round. Subway describes the sauce as naturally sweet with a kick of fiery chili and a little acidity to balance everything out. This time, though, it’s not just going on sandwiches.

Alongside the Doritos nachos, the returning Hot Honey Signature Swicy Collection includes two new subs: Hot Honey Italian and Hot Honey Turkey Italiano.

The Hot Honey Italian comes toasted with salami, pepperoni, Italian-style provolone, and hot honey. The turkey version has the same basic build, just with turkey added. So if hot honey on Doritos sounds like a bridge too far, you can stick to the sandwich route.

Or, if you’re like me, you can skip the sensible option and immediately wonder what hot honey, Doritos, cheese, and chicken taste like together.

When To Try Them

The Hot Honey Signature Swicy Collection arrived at participating Subway restaurants nationwide on August 20th and is sticking around through October 26th, while supplies last.

The Doritos Hot Honey Nachos come in Chicken, Steak, and Cheese builds, with Chicken and Cheese starting at $4.99 at participating locations. Prices are higher in California, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii, because apparently even Doritos have regional pricing.

And I don’t know about you, but hot honey on pizza? Sure. Hot honey on chicken? Absolutely. Hot honey on a pile of Nacho Cheese Doritos? I’m not saying Subway has invented the perfect late-night snack here. I’m just saying I’m suddenly very curious. Subway, you have my attention.
