Protein’s siren song can be resisted by no one, it seems. Over the last few years, we’ve seen countless food brands dashed on the rocks of Big Protein, as they’ve pivoted to making functional versions of their snacks, chips, and drinks in pursuit of gym greatness (or, more accurately, to ride the wave of a never-ending trend). Candy and chocolate brands have been no different: Hershey’s, Snickers, and Reese’s have lent their flavors to protein bars and powders, and – in case you hadn’t ascertained where I’m going with this by now – Ghirardelli has recently done the same.

The good news, though, is that it seems like it’s stuck the landing, flavor-wise. Let’s discuss.
ProSupps x Ghirardelli Whey Protein
A few months ago, ProSupps and Ghirardelli quietly dropped their new protein powder in Sam’s Club and Costco, and it’s also available online. The powder is made with premium Ghirardelli cocoa and zero added sugar, and contains 24 grams of protein per serving. It’s intended for protein shakes, of course, but ProSupps also recommends putting it in pancakes, oats, brownies, smoothies, or lattes. Basically, you can do whatever you want with it, within reason.
The new-ish protein powder comes during a very busy year for Ghirardelli, in which it has been steadily putting out new products. During the summer, it dropped two new cookie dough flavors, and swiftly followed those up with its new Premium Milk Chocolate Bar line. Both of those releases were very much in its standard wheelhouse, though, and this step into functional nutrition is a new one for the brand.
We Have A Winner!
Candy (and especially chocolate) brands making forays into the protein category is a pretty natural move, but it’s not guaranteed that the products they make will stand up to the same scrutiny as their standard fare. The good news, though, is that Ghirardelli and ProSupps seem to have done a good job with this powder. Customers have said it’s got a nice weight and creaminess to it, and the sweetness doesn’t taste artificial. Over on Instagram, @gordyyates compared its flavor to brownie batter — which is basically exactly what you’d expect and want from a Ghirardelli-flavored product.
Some people, though, have said that it errs on the side of too much sweetness — so if you prefer your protein powders to be a little more subtle, this might not be the one for you. By and large, though, it’s gone down a storm. And you can get it now! Yes, now! Right now!
