KFC Just Made A Protein Cereal, But You Won’t See It At Walmart

Oh, for goodness’ sake. As a British person, I’m sorry in advance for this one. I stand by the fact that British food is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be – yes, we have more than our fair share of duds and bland, beige, pasty dishes, but the beauty of a Sunday roast or a plate of fish and chips can’t be beaten, in my humble opinion. Sometimes, though, this little rainy island brings out a food that makes everyone stop dead in their tracks. Like anywhere else in the world, we’re not immune to novelty, for better or for worse. Maybe for worse.

This week, that has come in the form of KFC Protein Cereal. What the hell, sure.

Surreal KFC Protein Cereal

This week, British protein cereal brand Surreal has announced KFCereal, a new cereal which…tastes like KFC. It’s inspired by the chicken chain’s blend of 11 herbs and spices, and while we’re not sure whether there will be some kind of chicken-y flavor going on top of that, we wouldn’t be surprised. “Yes, it does go great with gravy,” Surreal said on its Instagram post revealing the new flavor. 

In fact, it looks like it’s designed to be eaten with gravy, if its website is anything to go by, and thus the whole concept of breakfast cereal is thrown into question. Is it still cereal if it’s not made with milk? Is it not just a kind of stew instead? Will anybody actually be eating this thing? Judging by how people have responded in Surreal’s announcement post, maybe not – but as a super limited-edition item anyway, it’s designed to make a splash, instead of being a genuinely viable option for breakfast. We press on.

If you’re on the fence, maybe the macros will help. Maybe. Each bowl of Surreal KFCereal has 19 grams of protein and a single gram of added sugar (it’s savory, so this one probably isn’t a huge surprise – but as a low-carb brand, that’s also the case across its other cereals). There’s a world in which this is kind of okay for snacking on from the box for a couple of high-protein mouthfuls. I probably won’t be having it for breakfast, though — and nobody in the US will have to worry about this one just yet. Given that KFC seems to be making its mission to release ever-weirder collabs worldwide with each passing day, though (see its KFC OREOs and KFC OREO Chicken Burger for proof of this), it won’t be long until every country has its own wacky product.
