Every day, I open Instagram and scroll through grocery-focused influencers telling me about things I should buy and review for you good people. This time around, we’ve got the new Frosted Apple Turnover Pop-Tarts. (Don’t worry, Pop-Tart superfans, our Frosted Cinnamon Roll coverage is on its way.) These were announced rather quietly inside a press release about the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Yep, Pop-Tarts sponsors a significant football game. Okay. But these Walmart-exclusive new Pop-Tarts are what we’re really here for. Read on for the full review of these new apple Pop-Tarts.

Pros: Based on the name, you might expect this to be yet another forgettable apple cinnamon Pop-Tart, but I was pleasantly surprised at how apple-y this new Pop-Tart flavor actually is. The filling is very close in texture to apple pie filling. And the actual pastry base of the Pop-Tart is also very reminiscent of an apple turnover—they didn’t change the pastry or anything, it just already has the right consistency and crumbliness. And, not for nothing, but the box isn’t lying: this is definitely green apple. Not too sweet, not too tart. Pop-Tarts rarely miss, and this new Pop-Tart flavor is no exception.
Cons: The icing layer is pretty thick; I would have preferred a more authentic apple turnover drizzle rather than a full layer. It wouldn’t be unheard of for Pop-Tarts; Chocolate Chip, Cinnamon Roll, and a few others have all pulled off the classic criss-cross icing pattern. For some reason, every one of these new Pop-Tarts is printed with a picture. (This strange decision also afflicts the Marshmallow Hot Cocoa Pop-Tarts.) I don’t know about you, but I prefer a little texture on the top of my Pop-Tart. A slab of icing smooth enough to print a cartoon on isn’t how I want to start my day.

Where can I get these new Pop-Tarts for myself?
Frosted Apple Turnover Pop-Tarts are available exclusively at Walmart. I found mine on an endcap rather than in the Pop-Tart section proper, so keep your eyes open across the whole grocery section. While you’re there, could you look for that Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup that Campbell’s put out a while back? It’s my white whale, seriously.
