Costco’s New Dessert Flavor Might Be A Smash Hit

The team that curates Costco’s food court has been busy over the last few months, folks – and it’s fair to say that they’ve had some swings and some misses, if the thoughts of customers are anything to go by. On the savory front, we’ve seen the food court take away the Combo Calzone and bring chicken strips to its US stores (which has generated a mixed response), and it’s also brought back its deli mustard to the joy of fans everywhere. Its sweet menu has been changing, too, with a new Girl Scout Cookie-coded sundae and a churro sundae that divided opinion.

Its most recent move, though, may well be one of its biggest successes of the year. Costco has just debuted a new Strawberry Shortcake Sundae in its food court, and people are very happy. Let’s talk about it.

Costco Strawberry Shortcake Sundae

Costco’s new sundae has, as all Costco items and food court dishes do, started appearing without any warning over the last couple of weeks. Over on Instagram, @costcohotfinds tracked one down and gave us a peek at what’s in store. The Strawberry Shortcake Sundae starts with Costco’s strawberry soft serve, with strawberry syrup mixed in, and it’s then layered with a generous handful of shortcake bites. It costs $2.99, slightly more than its regular sundae and ice cream cup – but hey, those shortcake bites don’t come cheap, we guess. 

This menu item looks set to be a summer smash, and in typical Costco fashion, you get a very generous portion for the price you pay. It also fits nicely into Costco’s recent strawberry-focused dessert output: Last month, it had a viral moment with a two-pound tub of strawberries and cream, which it shortly followed up with a new Strawberry Cream Pie. Strawberry is the flavor of the year, clearly!

The People Have Spoken…

As the new Strawberry Shortcake Sundae has just started rolling out, it’ll be a while until we have the full picture of how it’s being received – but so far, it looks like Costco has nailed it here. @costcohotfinds declared it to be one of her top three Costco desserts of all time, and plenty of folks in the comment section of her video have voiced their approval, with one person saying that it’s a “must try.” 

If you can’t find it at your Costco yet, though, hold tight: It looks as though this sundae is being rolled out gradually. It also looks as though it’s replacing the now ill-fated churro sundae, so people who were disappointed with that one will have cause for celebration. Summer is well and truly here, guys.
