We Tried the Internationally-Inspired New Lay’s Flavors

Lay’s has a wide variety of classic flavors, but in recent years they’ve expanded their repertoire by bringing us tastes from around the world. And, in 2024, they’ve done it again, introducing three international flavors (Tzatziki, Masala, and Honey Butter), so you can travel the world with your taste buds. And in fact, for one extremely lucky individual, you can travel the world with your actual body.

As Lay’s explains, they’re offering “one lucky fan and their guest the chance to win a trip to one of the flavor origin countries, either India, Korea, or Greece. Between August 12 and September 28, fans can enter to win by scanning the QR code on the back of a bag of Lay’s Wavy Tzatziki, Lay’s Masala, or Lay’s Honey Butter flavors, or by visiting laysflavordrop.com.”

But even if you’re not that one lucky fan, you still get to do the tastebud-traveling thing I mentioned by eating these chips. And that’s exactly what I did for this taste test. As far as my potato chip bona fides go, I’m a semi-regular chip-eater, especially with a sandwich, and I enjoy a wide variety of them, so I was excited to give these new flavors a whirl.

Lay’s Wavy Tzatziki

New Tzatziki Lay’s!

Lay’s Wavy Tzatziki

These chips are “inspired by the refreshing Greek flavors of yogurt, lemon, dill, garlic, and other unique elements, resulting in a crunchy take on the creamy Mediterranean classic.” I was a little skeptical about how a yogurt-based chip would taste, but looking forward to the garlic and dill.

Pros: The creaminess of the yogurt flavor was more pleasant than I expected, pairing well with the saltiness of the chip. It has an almost sour cream and onion quality but with some light lemon and dill flavors, as well. And I don’t know how Lay’s decided on this particular chip to get the wavy treatment, but it’s always appreciated!

Cons: The flavor of these is quite mild, to the extent that halfway through the bag I was really tasting potato more than anything else. But maybe you don’t want an overwhelmingly flavor-blasted snack; if so, these are a solid choice.

Lay’s Masala

New Masala Lay’s!

Lay’s Masala

Per the brand, these new Lay’s chips “contain a delectable fusion of spices including cumin, coriander, turmeric, and pepper, serving as a one-way ticket to the world of mouthwatering flavors found in traditional Masala dishes.” As a big masala fan, could these chips satisfy my cravings?

Pros: Salty, well-spiced, and flavorful, with a mild amount of heat, these new Lay’s are some really tasty chips. I easily ate the whole bag in one sitting and I could see picking these up again sometime soon.

Cons: True masala has a very complex flavor profile and this new Lay’s flavor can’t quite live up to it. While the chips are definitely tasty, if you’re looking for a really authentic approximation of masala, this is probably not going to satisfy.

Lay’s Honey Butter Chips

New Honey Butter Lay’s!

Lay’s Honey Butter

These new Lay’s “deliver a delicious blend of buttermilk honey and butter tastes, transporting consumers to the home of this beloved combo, Korea.” I will admit I was most anxious about trying these ones simply because I worried they would be too sweet and artificial-tasting for me.

Pros: The honey flavor tastes authentic—none of the artificial aftertaste I was concerned about. Each chip sincerely evokes the essence of honey and butter, and there’s a bit of a BBQ-flavored-chip thing going on with the sweetness and saltiness.

Cons: As I feared, this chip was simply too sweet for me. And while I love honey in the right context, it doesn’t sit particularly well alongside potato. I ultimately did not finish the bag.
