Bakers, it’s time to put the Rice Krispies cereal, marshmallows, and mixing bowl away. The OG brand behind your favorite DIY dessert just came out with two new flavors that finally capture the salty-sweet, toppings-forward treat we’ve been asking for: Chocolate Sea Salt Pretzel and Caramel Sea Salt Pretzel. What can we expect from these new Rice Krispie Treats? Hopefully something bold, crunchy, chunky, and messy. The messier, the better, if you ask me.

Let’s be honest: This has been a long time coming. People have been doctoring their own Rice Krispie Treat recipes since their inception, adding salty and sugary toppings like rainbow sprinkles, potato chips, M&M’s (yum) to maximize that sweet-and-salty crunch. And while Rice Krispies Treats have released a few flavors with fun toppings before—like the Birthday Cake variety with rainbow sprinkles—the new Bliss line is supposedly bolder, more indulgent, and likely inspired by some viral recipes online. Which I’m not mad about. Seriously, I’m rooting for these to be good—and for more flavors like them in the future. So let’s get to tasting them, shall we?

New Rice Krispie Treats!

Rice Krispies Treats Bliss: Chocolate Sea Salt Pretzel

Pros: First, let me say this: I’m not much of a baker myself, so I certainly haven’t made my own Rice Krispie Treats in the past. I really can’t compare these to any popular homemade recipes, but I can say I definitely like what’s happening here more than I expected to. With big salty pretzel chunks, chocolate squares, and a chocolate bottom coating that leans a little dark, they really remind me of kitchen sink cookies. Texturally, with the classic marshmallowy, crunchy-but-soft cereal center and the crisp pretzel toppings, it does work pretty well.

Cons: The flavor is not as cohesive or cozy as the caramel version (please see below). Chocolate is really the dominant flavor—so if that’s what you want, go for it. But the salty caramel is always a better flavor combo than salty chocolate…go ahead, quote me on it.

Pros: I’m pleased. This is pleasing. The crunch? Downright pleasant. In fact, please go ahead and pat yourselves on the back for this one, Rice Krispies. Instead of chocolate squares, this one nestles small caramel chips between those same big chunks of salty pretzels. Your first bite is instantly inviting. The puffy, gooey, crunchy, slightly sticky texture of the Rice Krispies square works so well with the salted caramel flavor. And the added crunch of the pretzels? Divine.

Cons: Could you make a better, slightly less sweet version of this on your own? Maybe with some potato chips crumbled on top for a true kitchen sink experience? Probably. But if that’s my only real critique, hey, I think they’ve done something pretty good here. I wouldn’t say they’re better than the OG classic, though. More of a fun detour to keep things exciting.
