If you’ve been to a sandwich shop or cool dive bar, you’ve probably seen Zapp’s potato chips, aka, “the stripey ones” (that’s what I call ’em anyway). The New Orleans-born chip giant is best known for its Voodoo flavor, but the lineup also includes “Spicy Cajun Crawtators” and “Hotter ‘n Hot Jalapeño.” Yeah…they definitely don’t sound like a Louisiana chip brand at all. But guess what people, for the first time in two years, a new Zapp’s flavor is hitting stores. And that’s not all. A new flavor of Zapp’s Sinfully-Seasoned Pretzel Stix is coming out as well.
What new Zapp’s flavors are we getting? Beignet? Crawfish boil? Traditional jazz?
While, no, those flavors are not in the works (I know, I was also curious what a jazz-flavored chip would taste like), some pretty New Orleans-coded items are heading our way, starting with the new Zapp’s kettle chip flavor: the Big Cheezy. Now you may be thinking, “Harumph, Jessica. Cheese is universal if not distinctly Wisconsin-coded,” to which I’d say, that may be true, except that New Orleans’ nickname is “the Big Easy.” But the name isn’t just an irresistible pun. According to the brand, the new Zapp’s flavor will be “a blend of cheddar cheese, sour cream, and Cajun seasoning for a flavorful, crunchy chip.” I assume these will essentially taste like sour cream and cheddar ruffles (but in kettle chip form) with some subtly spicy and earthy Cajun seasoning thrown into the mix. Somebody Zapp me over to the grocery store because I am sold.
The second new item is a bit less New Orleans specific but still sounds just as good: Sweet Cinnamon & Sugar flavored Sinfully-Seasoned Pretzel Stix. It is possible these are beignet-inspired, but it is also possible the good people over at Zapp’s just thought cinnamon sugar on a salty pretzel just sounded like a good combo, and you know what? I really can’t disagree with them on that. These do sound fantastic. According to Zapp’s you can expect a “crunchy, savory pretzel coated with a sweet cinnamon and sugar blend.” Again, nothing wrong with that.
If you are looking to get your hands on some of these delicious sounding sweet and salty snacks, you are in luck because these bad boys are now available in stores (grocery, convenience, wherever you get your Zapp’s) nationwide, and will also available for mail order on the Utz website. Fun fact: Utz owns Zapp’s. Who knew!? Less fun fact: These don’t appear to be on the website quite yet, but eventually we can all have a small taste of life in the big cheezy.
