It’s basically fall. Which means it’s almost Halloween. Which means crows are once again the coolest bird and you’ll probably start seeing those giant Home Depot skeletons around your neighborhood pretty soon.

It also means the candy aisles are about to bulk up―if they haven’t already. And while yes, we’re excited to see stacks on stacks of “Fun Size” bags taking over where flip flops and SPF 75 left off, we’re a bit more interested in what’s going on inside the bag. Maybe we’ve just been spoiled by these spooky Oreos, but if you think about it, any candy can “fun size” down. It takes serious dedication to tangy terror to turn your candy into skeletons with the kind of kooky creativity Haribo’s showing us this year.
Sweet-n-Sour Skeletons
Granted “gummy skeleton” sounds like an oxymoron―or just…the two words you don’t want to hear come out of your osteopath’s doctor in that particular order. But when gummy candy megalith Haribo is at the controls, you know you’re gonna get something fun, fun-shaped, and, especially in this case, surprising in the way the flavors work.
Just in time for Halloween, Haribo released their new “Crazy Skeletons” line. More than the oddly well-articulated skeleton, we’re loving the way they set up the flavors: each gummy skeleton has one sour side and one sweet side. You can start with either side facing down, hitting all the tastebuds and then let your teeth gnash in and make it all sweet n’ sour.
Shockingly Sophisticated Flavor Combinations
We haven’t tried them (yet), but the skeletons aren’t just little lumpy bony shapes―they seem to have like, fairly well-articulated rib cages. Like, these look pretty anatomically accurate, if we do say so ourselves.
As if you needed anything else to recommend consumption after hearing the words “Halloween gummy candy” (to be fair I may have a gummy candy… issue), these bags of Haribones (yep, just made that up) have culinary flavor combinations: Cherry & Kiwi, Strawberry & Blackcurrant, and Pineapple & Blood Orange. I tell grown adults that I enjoy consuming blood oranges, as in the citrus fruit, and they think that makes me edgy. (They’re really, really good; the intense color is just a bonus.) Blood orange paired against the tropical floral brightness of pineapple―in a gummy candy? And it can haunt me? Sign me up.
