Hey look, there’s another food to add to the list of protein everything: protein hummus. Little Sesame recently started marketing little cups of protein hummus and I already know what you’re thinking: By virtue of being almost entirely of beans (chickpeas) and seeds (tahini), isn’t hummus already high in protein? Well, not really. Little Sesame’s Classic hummus—which ranks third on our list of the best hummus at the grocery store—only has 2g protein per serving. Their new protein hummus, however, has 10g in a convenient 2.5oz cup. But is it good? I tried it to find out.

New Product!

Little Sesame Protein Hummus

Pros: If you don’t taste this new protein hummus alongside Little Sesame’s regular hummus, you might not be able to tell the difference. It’s a totally different consistency (more on that in a sec), but it’s still creamy and tangy, like well-blended hummus with a kick of lemon juice. There’s definitely a touch of bitter protein powder flavor in the mix, but it’s not a deal breaker, especially if you’re accustomed to the tastes and texture of high protein foods because you’re on a GLP1 or you’re getting gains or whatever. This is still tasty, high quality hummus.

Cons: So yeah, about the consistency, this stuff is loose. Have you been searching for a hummus you can drizzle over food? Well, this is the hummus for you. I did my best to eat it with some pretzel chips, but it would have been better suited to some Tostitos Scoops or another chip with a ledge. Also, if you’re familiar with Little Sesame hummus, you might pine for that slick creaminess when you eat this. There’s definitely a little bit of a grainy quality, but, hey, it’s hummus. Like I said, if you’re not eating this alongside Little Sesame Classic hummus, I really don’t think you’ll be offended by this stuff. Get them gains!

About the Author

Gwynedd Stuart

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
