Reese’s New Candy Is Designed For Football Season (But It Might Be Too Late)

Football season is in full swing, and it will be for a good couple of months – but food brands generally don’t waste any time. As such, while we’re seeing a couple of midseason football-themed releases (like the return of Chipotle’s Mesquite-Smoked Brisket), most places got in there early – ie., right when it all kicked off. Baked goods brands like Pillsbury, restaurants like Wingstop, and plenty of others revealed their football season items throughout August and September, and by now, the announcements have slowed to a trickle.

All of this has made us wonder whether Reese’s new candy slightly missed the boat here – but regardless of when it arrived, it has arrived, and we’d like to talk about it.

Reese’s Mini Footballs

Reese’s has just dropped its new Mini Footballs, which are available now on Amazon (and, according to @markie_devo, heading to major retailers soon). Reese’s hasn’t deviated from its standard flavor profile here; instead, this new candy is very much in the vein of Snickers Footballs, which took the chocolate bar and turned it into little balls. So it is with Mini Footballs, which are individual bites of milk chocolate shell and peanut butter creme. Not quite big enough to pass on a football field, but big enough to pass to your friends one by one, if you’re feeling generous. They’re also unwrapped, so you don’t need to fuss with trying to pick pieces of foil off each one.

We’re not the only ones who think Reese’s might be ever so slightly tardy to the party here. “Ugh I wish they already sold in stores before football season begins,” said a comment on @markie_devo’s post, before concluding with “Maybe next time!!” We’re personally not going to discount them entirely just because they’re coming a little later, and there’s a minor second-starter advantage here, inasmuch as everyone might be bored of everything else on offer. Others, though, have said how good these would be for game day – and we agree. Some Mini Footballs in a few bowls dotted around the room? We love to see it.

We’ve Been Here Before…

With all that said, though, it’s hard to ignore the fact that these new candies are essentially Reese’s Mini Eggs, just with a slightly different mold used in the factory. The creme, the shell, the unwrapped nature: It’s all the same. But that doesn’t mean they’re not worth buying, gosh darn it! Even if this candy is a variation on a theme, it’s still gonna taste good. Unless you dislike Reese’s, in which case…run a mile, folks.
