A grocery store rotisserie chicken may genuinely be one of my favorite things. Yes, yes: Friends, family, my cat, my health…I love all that stuff. But a pre-cooked chicken? That you can eat with anything? That gives you days of leftovers? That tastes good? At a price that doesn’t make you wince? Come on. For meat eaters, it’s hard to deny the power of a good rotisserie chicken, in all their salty, greasy, chicken-y glory.

In my view, there’s only one thing that’s slightly annoying about them: The fact you have to carve them yourself (or rip them apart with your hands, depending on how much patience you have on any given day). Sam’s Club has taken this pain point and turned it into a new deli item…but customers aren’t yet convinced they actually need it.

Sam’s Club Seasoned Pulled Rotisserie-Style Chicken

Sam’s Club just dropped its new Seasoned Pulled Rotisserie-Style Chicken, and the first thing to mention is that it doesn’t really feel that new. As anyone who shops there knows, Sam’s Club already sells rotisserie chickens, and while these new chicken tubs do seem to have an ever-so-slightly different ingredients list, they are, for all intents and purposes, just a slightly more convenient version of its already-popular cooked product.

Regardless, let’s talk about the details: You get 32 ounces of cooked chicken here, with Sam’s Club working out that there are about 11 servings of chicken in each pack. Every serving has 19 grams of protein, and – gulp! – 620 milligrams of sodium (a lot for something that only provides 110 calories and is a relatively small portion of the food you’ll likely eat in a day). Oh, and it costs $12.97.

$12.97? And How Much Does Its Rotisserie Chicken Cost Again?

$4.98.

So…That’s…

Yes. That’s more than double the price. Now, it should be said that its rotisserie chickens can vary in weight, and when you buy one, you’re also getting its carcass, gristle, and a load of inedible parts – but it’s hard to ignore the fact that you’re also paying way more for what is essentially convenience. That hasn’t escaped Sam’s Club customers, either. “Wildly overpriced when you can get the whole bird for $4.98,” said one person in an Instagram post made by @samsclubfoodreview, while another person said, “I love the convenience, but I don’t love the extra cost.” That said, I’m sure this will appeal to a lot of people — but to be honest, if I were faced with the choice of both, I’d just take a few extra minutes to shred the chicken myself. A pair of forks, a cutting board, and a little bit of elbow grease is all you need.
