Everyone knows the deal with Sour Patch Kids, right? You open up a bag of these candies, and you’re greeted by a bunch of little figures coated in sour sugar. The promise that Sour Patch Kids seem to make is this: If you can get through the tart coating on the outside, you’ll be rewarded with the sweet, gummy goodness in the center.

Well, what if that promise was inverted? What if this candy did things the other way around? That’s the gauntlet that Mondelēz International, the maker of Sour Patch Kids, is throwing down with its all-new Sour Patch Kids Chews. Sweet on the outside, sour on the inside. What a world! Here’s what you need to know.

Sour Patch Kids Chews

Sour Patch Kids Chews were announced by Mondelēz yesterday, and in the press release, the company acknowledged that its customers were looking for something a little different. “We know consumers want new textures and experiences when they’re in the candy aisle, so we saw an opportunity to bring SOUR PATCH KIDS signature sour to the world of chewy candy in a new and unique way,” said Mondelēz International’s Senior Director, Candy, Lauryn McDonough, in a statement. “After talking to SOUR PATCH KIDS consumers, we learned that SOUR PATCH KIDS CHEWS are what today’s consumers are after – you can sink your teeth into them, there’s a bold sensorial experience, and the texture is just right.”

“But what are they?” I hear you cry. Don’t worry, I’ll tell ya! Sour Patch Kids Chews are individually wrapped chewy candies that come in a bonbon shape (as opposed to the classic Sour Patch Kids characters), and which start with a sweet, chewy, candy exterior. Once you bite through this, you get what the brand is calling a “burst of sour sanding” on the inside. They’re much easier to eat on the go, or when you’re typing, or gaming…

Gaming?

Yeah, gaming. Mondelēz is promoting Sour Patch Kids Chews as a “great option for gamers or streamers,” and is clearly squarely marketing this new candy as a Gen Z-focused option. To celebrate the release of Sour Patch Kids Chews, it’s teaming up with a bunch of gaming streamers to promote the candy, and alongside that, it’s also running a sweepstakes, through which you can win some Chews and a custom-branded Xbox controller. Can You Just Tell Me About The Flavors?

Oh, sure, sorry. Sour Patch Kids Chews will come in Redberry, Blue Raspberry, Orange, Lemon, and Lime, with a selection of each flavor in every bag. You can find them in several sizes, and they’re available right now at major retailers like Walmart. Will they fare better than the Sour Patch Kids Oreos we tried a few years back? Only time will tell, but…we think so.
