It’s no big secret that Subway’s been in a tight spot over the last couple of years. In the face of competition from the likes of Jersey Mike’s (which was recently voted America’s favorite sandwich chain), Subway had to reconsider and reposition itself in a now-crowded market and closed over 700 locations last year in a bid to slim down its portfolio. 2026, though, has seen it roll out options like its value menu and trendy new sodas that have kept it in the conversation.

Its latest move, though, is its biggest talking point yet. Subway is now selling hot dogs. Yep. Hot dogs. BUT – and here’s the rub – you have to be in Canada to get them.
Subway SubDog
Yesterday, Subway announced that it was debuting the SubDog – which is basically exactly what it sounds like – in Canada. This new menu item is a footlong hot dog that Subway builds as a sandwich, with the same customization options that you’d get if you were ordering one of its subs. It’s made with a Schneider’s all-beef hot dog, weighing in at half a pound, and from the promotional pictures, it looks… kinda like a Subway roll filled with a sausage!
Subway’s not reinventing the wheel here, but what it’s trying to do, it says, is put an end to the question of whether a hot dog is a sandwich or not. According to Subway Canada, it is. “People have been debating this for years, but at Subway, we know sandwiches,” says Subway Canada’s culinary manager, John Botelho, in a statement. “With the SubDog, we’re not just joining the conversation; we’re settling it. This is a classic summer favourite, reimagined the Subway way.”
And…Is It Any Good?
Well, look: Subway’s probably never going to be able to fully compete with the folks and restaurants that have been making hot dogs for decades (and given that this is a limited-time menu item, it probably knows that). That said, if early reviews are anything to go by, it hasn’t done a bad job here! Yes, the actual thing doesn’t quite look like the menu images (when ordered, the SubDog looks notably less plump and abundant), but that’s not a new thing when it comes to fast food; the main thing is that it tastes good.
Subway’s SubDog is available now in stores across Canada, so get it before it disappears. Or don’t. I can’t tell you what to do. But I want a hot dog now, so…maybe Subway’s plan worked all along.
