The Laughing Cow Just Turned Super Serious For Some Reason

Through wars. Recessions. The invention of the internet. That one period of time when everyone was making whipped coffee. Still laughing. Well, something has finally gotten to her.

For the first time in more than 100 years, The Laughing Cow has stopped laughing. Select packages of Creamy Original cheese wedges are rolling out nationwide with the familiar red cow looking considerably less cheerful than usual.

And nobody knows why.

The brand isn’t explaining what happened yet, either. Instead, it’s calling her The Not Laughing Cow and asking everyone else to figure out what could possibly have wiped a century-old smile off her face.

I hope she’s okay.

The Not Laughing Cow Is Showing Up On Cheese Boxes

And if you spot one of the special packages, the difference isn’t all that subtle.

The Laughing Cow is normally grinning with her mouth wide open. On the new packaging, her mouth is closed, her expression is completely serious, and she looks like someone has just told her something she really didn’t want to hear.

The Not Laughing Cow is appearing on select packages of the brand’s Creamy Original cheese wedges, so this is strictly a cow-focused situation, not a new type of cheese.

Which raises a fairly important question: What happened?

The Laughing Cow isn’t telling us.

Or, more accurately, the people responsible for The Laughing Cow aren’t telling us.

Bel Brands says there will be an explanation eventually, but for now, we’re supposed to speculate.

The Not Laughing Cow Has Left The Cheese Aisle

The serious cow isn’t just moping in the cheese aisle.

The Not Laughing Cow has also been spotted in diners and parks, as well as across The Laughing Cow’s website and social media accounts. There’s even an entire website dedicated to whatever is going on, where people can follow along and ponder on why she has suddenly become so serious.

Bel Brands’ chief marketing officer Jamee Pearlstein isn’t giving much away, either. The company says it’ll let the cow explain herself “when she’s ready.”

So we’re waiting for a fictional cheese cow to make a statement. Fine.

Whatever happened must be pretty significant. This is a cow who has managed to keep smiling for more than a century while having earrings made out of boxes of her own cheese.

That alone raises questions I’ve chosen not to ask.

For now, you’ll have to keep an eye out for The Not Laughing Cow on select Creamy Original packages and wait for her side of the story.
