Trader Joe’s is kind of like a global specialty store wrapped up with an accessible, digestible (pun intended) bow. They’ve got foods from India and Italy and everywhere in between. As a product of the American Midwest myself, I have to admit that once in a while it’s nice to see some hometown representation in one of their new products, like the product I’m trying today: Trader Joe’s Ranch Cottage Cheese Dip. It just simply doesn’t get more Midwestern than combining two dairy products and then adding a buttload ranch seasoning.
What’s the point of making a dip that’s cottage cheese-based? Well, as dips go, this stuff is way lower in fat and calories, with just 1.5 grams of the former and 25 of the latter in a 2 tbs serving. That’s nice and light—but does it taste good? I picked up a tub to find out.
Pros: There is a lot of flavor in this misleadingly dull-sounding dip. One teensie taste was enough to knock the Minnesotan accent back into me, dontcha know! Trader Joe’s gets bonus points from all the texture-focused eaters out there who can’t seem to stomach cottage cheese in its curdy form. This dip is whipped and smooth—thank you for that!
This bit could be a pro or a con so let’s just meet in the middle: This doesn’t taste that much different than what you could make yourself with a packet of dip mix and a tub of sour cream, but the convenience is nice. I personally view TJ’s as the perfect place to make a quick stop for party snacks—and I would definitely bring this dip to a party.
Cons: Trader Joe’s Ranch Cottage Cheese Dip is just a bit too tangy. The number one thing I want from a dip is the ability to house an entire container, and I just can’t see myself getting that far with this dip. I think instead it’d be ideal for bringing out to a party to share that tang with your closest friends.
