Soft, tender waffle. Warm, gooey caramel. Something so simple, yet so perfect. Stroopwafels are the undisputed king of the breakfast snack world. Long gone are the days of cereal bars, instant oatmeal, and fig newtons. If you are someone who enjoys a coffee and a morning snack, I implore you to dive head first into the wonderful world of stroopwafels. Possibly the peak of Dutch baking innovation, a stroopwafel consists of two disks of sweet baked dough that are glued together by soft caramel filling. There is a lot of mystery and legend that surrounds the origin of many baked goods and pastries. People say that the croissant was invented during a siege on the Austrian capital city of Vienna by the Ottoman Empire. Nothing as dramatic as that is said of the stroopwafel, but I personally believe that the stroopwafel is a gift from God herself. Nothing as pure and as sweet could be anything but divinely inspired.

When I picture my perfect morning, I am in a beautiful yet modest house, overlooking a lake. A warm fire burns in the hearth and morning dew glistens on the grass and the trees. The waters of the lake are still and the morning sun paints a canvas of oranges and pinks across the sky. I sit in my small breakfast nook, and on the table in front of me is a warm cup of single origin coffee. Resting atop the mug is a stroopwafel, the heat from the coffee warming the waffle and softening the caramel. After a brief time pondering the ways of the world, I take the warm stroopwafel and bite into it, letting the sweet flavors coat my tongue and the back of my palate. I wash it down with a sip from my coffee and in that brief moment of bliss I finally understand what it means to be content. Let that image wash over you, and then go buy a pack of stroopwafels. I promise you will not regret it.
