We’ve been thinking a lot about Walmart’s Bettergoods line recently. How could we not? This year, the store has been investing heavily in the private label, bringing out new seasonings, mac and cheese flavors, and a bunch of new frozen items that have, at times, felt closer to the kind of thing you’d find at Trader Joe’s than at the biggest supermarket chain in the country. There’s some experimentation going on, and it’s appreciated.

Walmart’s new breakfast breads continue in that vein. It’s just released two new options – also under its Bettergoods name – and they’re fun, to say the least.

Bettergoods Breakfast Bread

Yesterday, @candyhunting on Instagram announced the arrival of these new breads (and as ever, we’re thankful for the intel: Walmart, along with other supermarkets, doesn’t issue press releases when it drops new private label items, so any sleuthing is welcome). The two new flavors are:

  • Lemon Huckleberry Breakfast Bread: A loaf studded with huckleberries and infused with lemon oil, and adorned with what looks like a sugar crust. Huckleberries are kind of like the looser, freer sibling of blueberries, and they have a sharper, tangier, almost more floral flavor.
  • Ube Coconut Swirl Breakfast Bread: Ube purée and coconut flakes are mixed through the dough here, and this one’s got a darker crust, perhaps thanks to the malted barley flour in the recipe. Expect a nutty flavor here, with a big hit of earthy sweetness from the ube. They also feel pretty similar to King Hawaiian’s Ube Coconut Rolls, which we tried a few months back – and if it’s anything like those, everyone’s in for a treat.

Both of these breads feel way more interesting than the other ones Walmart has previously offered, both under the Bettergoods brand name and elsewhere in its private label range. Its Great Value range currently has a Pre-Sliced Cinnamon Raisin Bread loaf, but other than that, there’s nothing too adventurous going on. Until now, that is.

How Much Are They? And Where Are They?

Each of these breakfast breads will retail at around (or just over) $5, and they will be available…at Walmart! As they’ve just arrived in stores, though, it might take a few days for them to show up near you. Have patience, grasshopper (and check the Walmart website to see whether they’re in your local store – they’re currently listed, albeit with no reviews just yet. It won’t be long, though).
