The Fourth of July is this week… are you ready? Surely I’m not the only one who has been so caught up with work and enjoying life in the summer sun to have already started preparing for the upcoming holiday, right? I’m not gonna lie. I started to panic a little bit when I realized the Fourth of July is just days away now. But, then I remembered the all-time seasonal proprietor, Krispy Kreme, always has my back. So I went ahead and taste-tested the seasonal doughnut flavors that Krispy Kreme has out for Independence Day and now, I’m going to let you know what’s up.

Are They Any Good?
USA Doughnut ― The USA doughnut is stuffed with a cookies and cream flavored filling and decorated with red icing, patriotic star sprinkles, and a USA decoration. The icing was flavorless, if anything vanilla flavored… but as far as doughnut icing goes, that’s not something I mind at all. What I did mind was the USA sugar piece. It felt to me like it was just rolled fondant pressed with a USA stamp, but between the soggy texture and its absolute lack of flavor it just felt out of place on a doughnut. The filling was nice and light and didn’t give the heavy feeling that a lot of filled donuts do. It could’ve been stronger in flavor, but you could definitely tell it was cookies and cream. The doughnut was adorable, no doubt about that, and it was delicious, too―just nothing to write home about.
Firework Doughnut ― The firework doughnut isn’t really intended to be any novelty flavor, it’s just meant to look absolutely adorable and on theme for the festivities, all of which it was. Personally, I would remove the fondant rocket from the doughnut before eating it, but it tastes great overall―just as a standard Krispy Kreme doughnut does. It’s all in the decoration for this one. Otherwise it’s just a glazed ring doughnut with blue icing (that’s Krispy Kreme code for delicious). This one I can imagine goes over especially well with kids. The gold and the sky-rocketing fireship are particularly charming.
Freedom Ring Doughnut ― This doughnut it’s for all of the sprinkle lovers out there. If you’re anything like me and love the crisp crunchiness of a doughnut dipped in sprinkles, then you will absolutely love this one. It’s a glazed ring doughnut dipped in icing and sprinkles again, but hey it looks nothing like the other and it’s intricately decorated and that counts for something too. It’s patriotic and classic in flavor. It’s easy to love.
Chocolate with Sprinkles ― Favorite doughnut alert! To me there’s something so classic about the glazed donut with chocolate icing from Krispy Kreme. It taste like childhood, but it still holds up. And the addition of red white and blue sprinkles bring it perfectly on theme so that I can still shamelessly eat my favorite doughnut―even for a seemingly unrelated celebration.
Final Verdict
I’d say between the classic flavors of these doughnuts, the distinctly festive box, and the intricate designs of the flavors, all of my Independence Day edible gifting has been sorted. Bundle another dozen of the standard glazed doughnuts in for just another $2.50, and you’ve got yourself a pretty sweet deal.
