If you thought the Greeks reigned supreme in the land of yogurt, allow us to introduce you to skyr, Iceland’s answer to fermented, spoonable, sweet dairy. While Greek yogurt had its time in the sun, skyr is now stepping up to the plate. More and more brands of skyr are popping up on shelves every day. But which ones should you buy? What’s the best skyr yogurt? That’s what we set out to find.

Videos by Sporked

Before we dive in, let’s tackle the question of what is skyr? If you want the full story, we have an entire explainer on the subject of skyr. But the TL;DR is this: Skyr is Icelandic yogurt known for being creamier and thicker than other yogurts thanks to the specific cultures used to make it. Skyr is also, for the most part, lactose-free. Isn’t that nice?

What we looked for in the best skyr:

  • Creamy texture. The best skyr yogurt is crazy creamy—even if it’s non-fat.
  • Mild to medium tang. Skyr isn’t quite as tangy as Greek yogurt, but it should still have somewhat of a tart, tannic quality.
  • Real, identifiably flavors. Flavored skyr should taste like it was made with real fruits or other ingredients. The fresher, the better.

Put down whatever yogurt you’re eating right now, and go to the grocery store to buy these skyr brands.

Best Plain Skyr

Thor’s Plain Skyr

Forget using Greek yogurt as a sour cream replacement. Use Icelandic yogurt! Thor’s Plain Skyr, specifically. It’s so thick and sour cream-like. This would rule on top of a baked potato or cheese enchilada. Don’t get me wrong, though. If you’re a plain yogurt eater in general, this is great for breakfast or a snack. A drizzle of honey and some fresh fruit would be delicious paired with this skyr if you prefer a sweet-but-not-too-sweet yogurt option. — Jordan Myrick

Best Citrus Skyr

Icelandic Provisions Lemon Extra Creamy

Want to eat lemon gelato in the morning? I mean, go for it. You’re an adult. Want to feel like you’re eating lemon gelato but actually you’re eating skyr? This is the best skyr to buy. It’s so tart and tangy while also being extremely creamy. And there are these little bits of lemon in there that give you pops of zest and zip. I do want you to understand, though, that it is VERY tangy. You might want to add some berries to give your tastebuds a break. Justine Sterling

Icelandic Provisions Coconut Skyr is my personal favorite yogurt we tried during our initial skyr taste test. Thor's Strawberry Skyr

Best Strawberry Skyr

Thor’s Strawberry Skyr

The strawberry flavor here is fresh and fruity. This would be great topped with sliced bananas, fresh blueberries, or a sprinkle of granola. You could even spread this on toast or a bagel because it’s so thick it’s almost cream cheese-y. This is one of the best fruit-flavored yogurts in general, so it’s also obviously the best skyr Icelandic yogurt, too. — Jordan Myrick

Best Non Fat Vanilla Skyr

Norr Organic Probiotic Skyr Vanilla Non Fat

I cannot believe this is non-fat skyr. It is super thick and super creamy. The vanilla flavor is almost a bit fruity like real vanilla bean can be. Seriously, it’s practically like ice cream. I really don’t think I’ll go back to any other non-fat yogurt after trying this. It’s damn good. (And the plain Norr skyr may not have topped Thor’s plain skyr, but it is a good buy, too!) — Justine Sterling

Painterland Sisters Meadow Berry

Best Mixed Berry Skyr

Painterland Sisters Meadow Berry

If Yoplait is your yogurt of choice but you’re looking to branch out and step up your fermented milk game, then Painterland Sisters has the best skyr for you. The Meadow Berry flavor tastes more like traditional yogurt rather than Greek yogurt—it doesn’t have that super drying tannic quality, it’s much more gentle. And the berry flavor tastes much more like fresh berries than your usual store bought berry yogurt. (Though it does still taste like “generic mixed berry” rather than having specific berry flavors.) — Justine Sterling

Icelandic Provisions Extra Creamy Salted Caramel & Banana

Best New Flavor

Icelandic Provisions Extra Creamy Salted Caramel & Banana

What a swing from Icelandic Provisions! Caramel and banana?? This could have been a real flop. It could have tasted like yogurty banana Runts. But instead it’s bananas foster in a cup. You even get a burnt sugar sort of flavor and it tastes like cooked banana, rather than fresh. There’s even that touch of salt. Someone put a lot of love into making this skyr. Thor's Vanilla Skyr

Best Vanilla Skyr

Thor’s Vanilla Skyr

Thor’s Vanilla Skyr is basically the best thing I’ve ever put in my mouth. It is so creamy and rich. Vanilla beans are speckled throughout the container. There’s no weird, chemically alcohol taste that vanilla-flavored products often have. This yogurt is so decadent, it’s practically a dessert. But don’t let that stop you from eating it for breakfast! Eat this anytime, anywhere. It’s perfection. — Jordan Myrick

Painterland Sisters Passion Fruit

Best of the Best

Painterland Sisters Passion Fruit

I am obsessed with this skyr. I love real passion fruit flavor but have rarely encountered a packaged product that faithfully replicates it. This skyr from Painterland Sisters does it. It really tastes like fresh, tangy, tropical passion fruit! And it’s so creamy. I savor this skyr when I eat it. Each bite is a decadent treat—but it still packs 16g protein and has just 8g sugar (which isn’t nothing but is much less than any actual sweet treat). It’s the best skyr I’ve ever had. And, as you might be able to guess, I’ve had a lot. — Justine Sterling
