New Little Debbie Nutty Buddy Cakes Are Peanut Butter Perfection

What a time to be alive. Our best flavor scientists are creating bubblegum-flavored energy drinks, Dubai chocolate-flavored popcorn, and Slurpee-flavored almonds. In short, food-flavored foods are in. Today, I’m reviewing another entry in that fantastically complicated genre: Nutty Buddy-flavored Twinkies. (Okay, they’re not actually Twinkies, but you find me a better word for a creme-filled cake bar in this exact shape.)

Yes, the mad geniuses at Little Debbie weren’t satisfied with their Nutty Buddyfication of creme pies earlier this year; they went deeper. Hostess put their chocolate-covered Twinkies out to pasture years ago: let’s find out whether Little Debbie can pull off the concept better with the addition of peanut butter.

Pros: I didn’t think anything would live up to the Nutty Buddy Soft-Baked Creme Pies from earlier this year, but these are unreal. The cake is moist without being sticky—no small feat for pre-packaged cakes. The peanut butter filling is just as good as it is in the creme pie while being better proportioned with the rest of the ingredients than it is in the creme pie. Little Debbie really allowed Hostess to think they mastered the Twinkie concept for decades just to walk in, sit down at their table, and pull this out like it was easy. This is the new king of bar-shaped snack cakes.

Cons: My biggest problem with these was actually put into plain English by someone from Little Debbie. I spoke with a few L.D. team members back at the Sweets and Snacks Expo in May; of course, the success of the Nutty Buddy Creme Pies came up. Apparently, they can’t make them fast enough. The demand for these Nutty Buddy variants is so high, it’s hard to actually get your hands on them.

What snack cake should be Nutty Buddy’d next?

Any of them. All of them. Please. I wouldn’t kick a pack of Nutty Buddy donuts out of bed. I might invite a Nutty Buddy Cosmic Brownie into bed. How about something in the rolled cake field a la Swiss Rolls? Or that perfectly-hexagonal Zebra Cake? There’s no wrong answers; I want to see a new Nutty Buddy product every 3 months until I die.
