Shake Shack’s Reese’s Shake Is All Treat, No Trick

Earlier this month, Shake Shack debuted a brand-new collaborative milkshake just in time for the spooky season. The Reese’s Shake features three different forms of Reese’s packed into the same crackable chocolate shell we saw in their viral Dubai Chocolate shake. Shake Shack was nice enough to send over a gift card so we could check out this new dessert (plus their returning Big Shack–stay tuned for that review as well); let’s find out whether this is worth skipping the Beggar’s Night festivities for.

New Shake Shack Shake!

When I visited Shake Shack’s Innovation Kitchen in NYC a few weeks ago (humblebrag, I know), I got to chat with the team about what specifically makes their Black & White Shake so good. While anyone can mix vanilla and chocolate shakes together, Shake Shack blends its fudge sauce into the vanilla frozen custard to deliver a richer half-and-half experience that I’ve loved long before I started covering food professionally.

Pros: The new Reese’s Shake takes that fantastic base “custard blended with sauce” concept and elevates it with the addition of Reese’s Peanut Butter. The peanut butter custard core of this hard chocolate-shelled shake is authentically Reese’s, above and beyond the endless number of chocolate-peanut-butter-alikes from other establishments.

The addition of ground Reese’s Pieces is so smart, adding a little crunch to remind you that the Reese’s spectrum goes far beyond those milk-chocolate cups. This milkshake will make any Reese’s fan happy… which should be everyone on earth except my friend Antonio, who recently grew out of his peanut allergy and proclaimed peanut butter “mid”. Boo this man.

Cons: The use of unchopped mini Reese’s Cups (not to be confused with miniature Reese’s Cups–there’s a big difference) as a garnish is a fun visual that affirms this is a real Reese’s collaboration, but it presents a logistical issue once you’re ready to finish your shake. Considering the attention to detail in chopping the Reese’s Pieces finely enough that they’ll travel up the straw, the cups are a step backwards.

How long will the Reese’s Shake be on the Shake Shack menu?

While the Reese’s Shake launched on September 1st, Shake Shack has not announced an official end date for the promotion. That said, I’d be surprised to see this last too long past Halloween. Each store can only produce so many of these Reese’s Shakes per day on account of having to pre-prepare and chill the chocolate-shelled cups for that cracking effect; if you’re looking to try this limited-edition treat for yourself, check the app first and make sure it isn’t sold out for the day before you hop in the car.
