Few snacks evoke sepia-toned, nostalgic fall feels better than a candy apple. Think about it: The wind tousling your hair, a chill on your face, a hat on your head, and a sticky, caramel-coated piece of fruit speared in front of you, held in one hand, with the other clasped firmly in your mom’s as she pulls you through whatever fairground you’re in, rides spinning around you. I could go on with this all day, but in short – it’s the kind of food that makes one feel young. Carefree. Unburdened by adult life.

Maybe that’s what Costco was thinking too, when it debuted its latest food moment in-store: A candy apple stall. Fingers crossed this lands at a store near you.
Costco’s Candy Apple Roadshow
Last weekend, our source for all things Costco @costcohotfinds spotted a candy apple stall in her local outlet. This stall (which looked as though it was located near the chips) was dishing out loaded caramel apples, made there and then, with a bunch of different toppings. There were apple pie apples, apples covered in nuts and sprinkles, and your standard, unadorned, classic caramel apple. The apples themselves were, in typical Costco fashion, absolutely enormous – and they came in at just over $5 per piece.
This isn’t the first time Costco has done this: Candy apple stalls have appeared at its stores for a couple of years now. However, as @costcohotfinds notes, these are roadshow pop-ups as opposed to permanent fixtures for fall, and so they’re not guaranteed to be in every location. As expected, a lot of people are very keen on Costco bringing it to their closest supermarket, if @costcohotfinds’ comments are anything to go by. Those who have had the pleasure say that the apple pie apple is the winner, too – just in case you were planning what to order.
Caramel Apple Season
It’s nice to see actual caramel apples in a grocery store, considering that caramel apple-flavored items have so often been fairly disappointing in the last few years. This year, there have been some winners and some losers. Olipop’s Caramel Apple flavor was a dud in our books: When we tried it, we found its flavor way too artificial and overwhelming, with little actual apple sharpness. La Colombe’s new Salted Caramel Apple Latte, meanwhile, fared better in our estimation – and really, it’s the espresso flavor that gets in the way, which is a testament to the actual caramel apple of it all.
But let’s be real: None of them can beat the real thing. Keep an eye out next time you’re in Costco for these.
