Convenience is kind of our thing here at Sporked. That means we’re all about breakfast shortcuts. Why make waffle batter when you can just buy really good frozen waffles? Sure, you could scramble eggs, fry bacon, and bake up some hash browns—or you could just buy a frozen breakfast bowl that takes literally one minute to cook in the microwave. This year we taste tested everything from breakfast burritos to chocolate cereal, but a few breakfast foods we tasted were real standouts—and they just so happen to make having a delicious morning meal extremely easy. Keep these in your kitchen for lazy mornings.
If you love the bacon and gruyèe sous vide egg bites at Starbucks, you are going to love Three Little Pigs Uncured Bacon & Swiss Egg Bites. They’re a perfect dupe—and you can enjoy them without suffering the indignity of having someone spell your name with three incorrect vowels. They’re fluffy, light, and rich with smoky, salty flavor. Plus, they’re ready to eat after only 40 seconds in the microwave. When I reviewed these back in February, I predicted they’d be getting a Sporked Award. Look at them now!
I recognize this is a somewhat controversial pick for the best breakfast food we tasted this year. When I brought this savory, egg- and bacon-filled toaster pastry on an episode of Good Mythical More, my boss Link absolutely hated it. But I am holding strong to my conviction that Bacon Toaster Scrambles are, in fact, delicious. The crust is unbelievably flaky and buttery, and the filling is smoky, eggy, and cheesy. When it comes to savory foods you can just pop into the toaster, I don’t think it gets better than this. Toaster Scrambles are not new (I remember liking them back in the ‘90s), but if it’s been a while since you had one, give ‘em another shot.
Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks.
Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown.
What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction.
Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home.
Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
