The 5 Best Things We Ate in June

In Southern California, June Gloom means gray skies, bouts of ugly, sprinkling rain, and temperatures that fluctuate from fluffy-jacket chilly to scorching hot. How did we at Sporked overcome such harrowing conditions? WIth yummy food, obviously. Just because it was gross outside doesn’t mean we had to eat gross things. Here are five food products that really lifted our spirits during the month of June.

As always, check out our weekly best things series on our social platforms if you want to keep up!

On The Border Monterey Jack Queso

Our jar of On The Border Monterey Jack Queso stayed on the top shelf of the Sporked fridge like a beautiful, glowing shrine for about two days—which is how long it took us to completely devour it. For those glorious in-office days, whenever we needed a little pick-me-up, this extra rich and creamy blanco queso was right there, waiting for us. Anyone who visited the Sporked kitchenette was treated to a long speech about how indulgent, zesty, and peppery it is, and how they needed to try it immediately. The same speech you’re getting right now, really. Go buy it!!

Ellenos Real Greek Yogurt

Ellenos Real Greek Yogurt is quite possibly the best yogurt we’ve ever tasted. (It’s not featured in our Greek yogurt ranking, but that’s sure to change.) The plain yogurt itself is so smooth and pure. But guava, passionfruit, and marionberry flavors—which have fresh fruit at the bottom of the cup—totally bring it to another level. This tastes like yogurt you could only find at a hip farmer’s market—not something readily available in stores. And honestly? I’ve never been much of a yogurt fan myself, but I will be buying this on a regular basis from now on. So if “yo gurl” says she doesn’t like yogurt, grab her some Ellenos yogurt, stat. It’s seriously life changing.

Pilgrim’s Zesty Ranch Mini Nuggets

Who knew such tiny nuggets could pack such a mighty flavor? Pilgrim’s chicken nuggets already made our list for the best frozen chicken nuggets, but these zesty ranch nuggets are on a whole other level. When you bite into them, you immediately tastey tender meat that’s saturated with tangy, zesty, garlicky ranch flavor. Mini nuggets are often too dry, but these are super juicy and addictive. Buy them at your own risk—you just might devour a whole bag in one sitting.

DiCamillo Bakery Kummelweck Rolls

In case you missed it, Sporked celebrated America’s birthday (July 4th) by promoting something actually worthy of true, unadulterated patriotism: regional sandwiches. One of those sandwiches included Buffalo, New York’s infamous beef on weck: thinly sliced roast beef, horseradish, and au jus on a kummelweck sandwich roll. Thanks to their nationwide shipping, you can order these freshly baked kummelweck rolls from DiCamillo Bakery (based in NY). We received two dozen for $24.99 and indulged in some of the best bread we’ve ever tried. These rolls were lusciously soft but sturdy enough to soak up that au jus, topped with the perfect amount of pretzel salt and caraway seeds. If you love roast beef sandwiches, we implore you to try this bread.

Dot’s Baked Cheese Curls

For a company that only hit the market in 2012, Dot’s pretzels are already in a league of their own. Dot’s makes some of the best pretzels you can buy—but their snack excellence apparently extends to cheese curls, too. “Those are dangerous. I feel like I could eat an entire bag,” said managing editor Gwynedd Stuart when we passed these around the Sporked desks. They are crisp and lightly crunchy, with a baked cheesy flavor that’s undeniably bold without totally overwhelming your palate with sodium. They taste like something you’d get at a local fair or artisan snack shop. Watch out, Cheetos, because Dot’s Baked Cheese Curls could give you a run for your money.

You can find her overstaying her welcome at just about every LA coffee shop, working on a screenplay and avoiding all eye contact. (She is embarrassed to be there, please leave her alone.)
