When it comes to new cookies, sometimes Oreo swings for the fences (remember the Oreos that tasted like Coke?) and sometimes it returns to its ever-deepening well of previous flavors to bring back a banger. If you’ve pined for the return of Golden Birthday Cake Oreos, good news—they’re back and they’re joined by Double Chocolate Oreo Cakesters. Are the Birthday Cake Oreos as good as people online seem to remember them being? Are the new Oreo Cakesters better than all the other Oreo Cakesters? We tried both of these (sorta) new Oreos to find out.

Double Chocolate Oreo Cakesters
Pros: Like the original Oreo Cakesters, Double Chocolate Oreo Cakesters consist of two squishy cocoa-flavored cakes sandwiched around a layer of creme, but in this case, the creme is also chocolate-flavored. I’m not a Cakesters purist nor am I an Oreo purist, and I think these are much better than original Cakesters. The creme tastes like chocolate cupcake frosting and it genuinely complements the cocoa flavor of the cakes instead of just adding more sugary sweetness like the original creme. They taste like frosted brownies. These are the only Oreo Cakesters I would actually buy again.
Cons: They definitely still suffer from the issue from which all Cakesters suffer: They taste like the preservatives that keep soft-baked, factory-manufactured cookies soft. But in this case, the chocolate-on-chocolate action masks it just enough to make these enjoyable to eat.

Birthday Cake Golden Oreos
Pros: If you like birthday cake flavored foods, you will certainly love these. Likewise, if you ever fantasized about eating an entire tube of Lip Smackers Vanilla Frosting lip gloss, you will love these. They taste like vanilla cupcakes slathered in vanilla cupcake frosting. The flavor is powerful, but it isn’t gross—the Golden Oreo cookies have enough salt to make that cloying, faux-baked-goods flavor tolerable. Also, from an aesthetic perspective, these are cute as hell. The colorful edible confetti in the frosting doesn’t necessarily add texture that I noticed, but it’s fun to look at.
Cons: Wow, these stink! When you open the package, the cookies smell like a candle that’s supposed to smell like vanilla cake. It’s intense! But given the popularity of vanilla cake-scented candles, I guess it’s a stink plenty of people enjoy.
