Hey, remember when Heinz ran a commercial during the Grammys this year? If you went to MustardXMustard.com after that ad, you learned that Heinz had brought in DJ Mustard as their first-ever Chief Mustard Officer—a role that would come with the responsibility of creating a new mustard. Heinz hasn’t launched a new mustard in almost ten years, so this is a big deal. The creative process took a few months, but I finally got my hands on an early bottle of the Heinz x DJ Mustard collab.
Why does a DJ have a mustard?
I’ll keep this as brief and family-friendly as I can. Last year, DJ Mustard produced three songs for Super Bowl halftime performer Kendrick Lamar (including Drake’s eulogy the diss track “Not Like Us”). One of the other songs, “tv off,” features Kendrick vocalizing a prolonged “MUSTAAAAAARD,” which took off as its own meme. This definitely got Heinz’s attention; the same voice clip was featured in the first commercial announcing this collaboration.
Oh, and DJ Mustard picked his DJ name because his first name is Dijon. It’s hard to argue with that, honestly.
Where can I find this new mustard?
Much like recording a diss track, you have to have beef to get this mustard. While supplies last, Buffalo Wild Wings is giving out free full-sized bottles of Heinz MUSTAAAAAARD with any dine-in beef entree. (It’s a little funny that the eponymous MUSTAAAAAARD soundbite is from a song so intrinsically opposed to Buffalo Wild Wings’ business model of never turning the TVs off.)
If you’d rather buy this condiment outside of a sports bar, Heinz has promised a retail release later this summer at Target, 7-Eleven, and online through Walmart or Amazon.
