Recently we reported that Lay’s was bringing back megapopular fan-favorite Do Us a Flavor promotion, and in that article we shouted out some of the flavors that came from past iterations of said promotion. One such flavor is Chesapeake Bay Crab Spice Lay’s. These were originally a part of the 2018 Do Us a Flavor promotion, and have unexpectedly made a return on store shelves, totally unannounced. We found them at Walmart so we’re cracking open a bag to see how much spice and how much crab these chips are really packing!
Pros: I have never met a Lay’s chip that I didn’t like—and this is no exception. The “crab spice” flavor is incredibly reminiscent of Old Bay seasoning and the chips are perfectly seasoned throughout the bag (which is definitely a rarity). I went through way more of this bag than I anticipated while working on this review.
Cons: Whatever you do, don’t smell the chips before you eat them. Upon first opening the bag and giving them a sniff, I was overwhelmed by an imitation crab scent that was very offputting. For whatever reason, after I ate a few chips, the scent wasn’t as bad. However, initially it was almost enough to make me question eating any at all.
Additionally, while the crab spice flavor is good, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that it would taste even better if this was a collaboration with Old Bay, which isn’t a stranger to collaborating with snack brands. (The Old Bay Goldfish were one of Sporked’s “Best Brand Collabs“and I NEED them back permanently.) They’re good but they could be so much better if they were made with the real deal.
