We just got word of a new Oreo flavor—but you’ll need to be very lucky to get a taste.
I spend most of my day being jealous of international treats I don’t get to try. The United Kingdom gets tutti-frutti Fanta and Watermelon Absolut Vodka+Sprite—and those are comparatively bland to what comes out of Asia. We all know about the wild variety of Japanese Kit Kats, but not as many people know that Japan is an amazing place for Oreo flavors too. Remember those Tiramisu OREO Thins I covered last year? Japan was the first to figure out that flavor would be a good idea—way back in 2017. This year, Oreo is taking further inspiration from some popular Asian flavors by releasing Cherry Blossom Matcha Oreo Thins here in the United States (sort of, but we’ll get to that).
How are they packing all that flavor into one thin Oreo?
These new Oreo cookies contain a cherry blossom matcha flavored creme. (If you need a refresher on what matcha means, check out this article from our own Matt Crowley.) Despite the separate pink and green cremes, the package does clarify that the creme’s flavor is uniform.
As much as I prefer chocolate Oreo cookies to the golden alternatives, I do wonder if these flavors would work better with a golden cookie base. That said, I’m more than willing to be proven wrong.
How can I get my hands on these exotic new Oreos?
That’s gonna be the tricky part. Oreo is exclusively offering these new Oreo Thins through an online giveaway that you can enter here—and there’s only 1,000 packs up for grabs. The stock of these new cookies are so limited; I’m not even sure I’ll get a sample to review for you good people (fingers crossed).
Has Oreo really never made a Matcha flavor before?
Oh, they absolutely have, just not here. I see Chinese or Japanese Matcha/Green Tea Oreos pretty frequently in international markets. This flavor concept is proven; here’s hoping the response to this limited release inspires a larger U.S. release in the future that everyone can get their hands on.
