It’s a great day to be a lover of little treats. I have not one, not three, but two limited-edition Hostess treats to review! Hostess has a long and storied history of flavors, and while neither of the snack cakes I’m trying today are brand new, they’ve been in the Hostess vault long enough that they’re worth talking about. First off, we’ve got the returning Orange Creme Pop Twinkies; these were last on shelves back in 2019. I’ve also got a box of Hostess S’mores Cupcakes, which haven’t been seen since 2022. Let’s find out whether these deserved their return to the spotlight—or if they should end up in the Hostess Graveyard for good.
Pros: As you’d hope, the creme inside these Twinkies tastes exactly like a Dreamsicle. Twinkies and fruit-flavored creme go together like chocolate and peanut butter. (Did you know the first Twinkies were filled with banana flavored creme?) As a flavor profile, orange creamsicle is having a moment right now, so it’s surprising that this flavor isn’t even new. Hostess is just ahead of the game.
Cons: Why are Twinkies always a little wet? I’m glad they’re moist and fluffy, but that does come at the expense of what I’m dubbing “Twinkie Fingers,” that particular light sheen of cake grease found after eating any Hostess cakes, but especially Twinkies.
Pros: Here’s a goofy dichotomy for you: I don’t like actual marshmallows, but I love marshmallow flavored things. In that spirit, this s’mores-alike might be the perfect Hostess cake. The marshmallow flavored creme is exactly what it should be, while the chocolate icing layer on top brings a great texture and flavor to the party. And, while they aren’t advertising it as such, I swear there’s something graham cracker-y in the flavor of the cake here.
Cons: No notes. Go get you a box or three of these Cupcakes, y’all.
