There are a lot of things to love about Costco’s bakery, and a lot of things you should be buying from it. From muffins to danishes, coffee cakes to spice loaves, a lot of its best items (which we’ve taste-tested, just FYI) are affordable, reliable, and easy to grab when you’re in-store—and some of its baked goodies are so tasty that they even have people renewing their memberships.
When it comes to its sheet cakes, though, things haven’t been quite as rosy as they could be. For years, Costco has used a pretty old-school procedure when you want to buy a customized cake. You can’t call ahead or put in your order online, but instead, you have to go to your local store and fill in a paper request a few days in advance. Feels very ‘90s, right?
Well, kids of the internet age will be overjoyed to hear that’s all about to change. Costco’s going digital with its cakes, across the board.
Costco’s Introducing Online Ordering for Its Cakes
In Costco’s first-quarter earnings call for 2026, CEO Ron Vachris confirmed that you’ll soon be able to order its cakes from the comfort of your laptop and phone—and you can do the same with some of its deli items, too. “We’ve got ordering cakes and deli trays online coming,” said Vachris. “Many of the things that we’ve heard from our members that could be a little bit clunky are now moving to a digital state, and we’re seeing great adoption right out of the chute.”
Notably, this is a move that Costco seems to have been trialling for a couple of months. In a Reddit thread from late 2025, a customer revealed that they had discovered that they could order custom cakes through the Costco app. A person who claimed to be an employee chimed in on the thread, stating that, “This is something that is slowly being rolled out a little bit at a time. If it’s not available for you yet, please be patient.” Well, it looks like this process proved to be a success with the small customer pool that had access to it back then, and now you can order those baked goodies while you tap away at all of your favorite Costco products.
For Costco Customers, Online Cake Ordering Is a Great Move
Judging by what Vachris said in the Q1 earnings call, and by how customers were pining for online ordering for custom cakes in the Reddit thread, people will be delighted across the board. Customers no longer have to drive (and search for parking) to put in an order, only to return to pick up their cake: Now, they can do it in just a few taps.
One customer over on Reddit also highlighted how the former system could have been potentially inaccessible for people with disabilities, mobility issues, or injuries. “I wish they had this for my fiancé’s birthday. Trying to fill a slip out with a broken hand wasn’t fun,” they stated. No doubt that this new system will reveal some teething problems and issues of its own, but it feels like a good step forward.
